Jacks Grampa 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2020 Cleaning out a closet today and found a mink shawl and a raccoon collar from an old coat but I'm having trouble getting on the dubbing loop evenly. What am I doing wrong? I haven't used a dubbing loop in years but I know I used to know how.
ScienceGuy141 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2020 Are you having trouble getting the fibers into the loop evening, or adding an even amount of material across the length of the loop. You could try using a dubbing clip to get the fibers in the loop how you want, or maybe use dubbing wax to hold the fibers in place once positioned into the loop. Jacks Grampa 0 Report post Posted April 19, 2020 I'm having trouble getting evenly distributed on the thread especially the longer fur of the raccoon. BTW does P.E.T.A. know what we do?

mikechell 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2020 The last four post between Mark and I have been deleted ... just in case anyone was "put off" or offended by the conversation. Now back to our regularly scheduled thread! 🙂

It's difficult to say what problem you're having, but often it's trying to use too much material at one time. Just a guess. All the best with figuring it out. tjm 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2020 The mink from a collar that I use is kinda slippery stuff, it is one dubbing that I like to wax the thread, apply small bits of dubbing, as in touch dubbing, til I think there is plenty, then fold the thread up to form a loop, then twisting, wetting fingers might also help, but I'm guessing tidewater guessed right about too much at a time. I use it in a noodle as often as a loop, especially on small flies. Some outside references, but enter "dubbing" in the search box top right and there are hundreds of posts on this forum too. https://globalflyfisher.com/tie-better/dubbing-techniques https://thefeatherbender.com/2013/01/31/making-a-fur-hackle-and-dubbing-tutorial/ http://swedneckflyfishing.com/touchdubbing_steps.htm https://idahope.wordpress.com/2008/10/19/fly-tying-techniques-diy-muskrat-dubbing/
Jacks Grampa 0 Report post Posted April 20, 2020 Thanks for the advice. I think I may have been using too much. I'll try tonight. Too pretty here not to go fishing.
