Hey Guy’s,

I’ve recently learnt some really exciting methods with tying surf candys/epoxy baitfish patterns.

Happy to share what I’ve learnt if anyone is interested.
Picked up the techniques from outstanding fly tyer Giannidepace.

How do you tie yours?

All the best,

Chris

so what have you learned and are willing to show us?

Hey Mate, the two key methods, involve using eye shadow, and sharpie/marker pens and isopropyl alcohol.

You can use any colour eye shadow depending on the finish your after. You only need to mix a little with the epoxy.

Once mixed, it really does gives a nice sparkle to the epoxy. Gives you outstanding base colours.

Using the marker pens, colour up the fly as desired, and dip a cotton bud into some isopropyl alcohol. You then dab the marker pen with the alcohol, which makes the colours dispurse, and bleed, looking much more natural.

You can go on to layer colours to create depth. The possibilities are endless.

I’ll do a bit of a step by step with these methods.

Im still learning and experimenting.

This is how I tie my surf candies.  Not doing a lot of salt water fishing these days, so they don't get a lot of use.

Hey Mate, thought I might interject my type of candies.   I use Solarez UV resin and do colors between coats mostly with sharpies.   I use lotta glitter dust on stuff too.  Might work for you.   I wanted to get the shine/mirror look to some so used silver wrapping ribbon for the heads and used sharpies for coloring instead of metal foil.   I’m too lazy with epoxy anymore....But use alots of SallyHansenHardAsNails to add outer coats sometimes.  Some big poppers with dust and flash wrapped bodies then   UVed them.   Just about completely stopped painting poppers use glitter dust and resin or SHAns.

Saw where a guy used flex coils for candy bodies.  I’m working on a squid with the flex coil body.   In progress

I tie my sand eels with body braid. Quick, simple and effective. Body braid allows the underlying colors to shine through, takes sharpies well and eyes stick to it without issue. A simple coat of Sally Hanson completes it.

Thanks for the idea. What’s in the middle two?   Wonder where the Aussie went?   My first.   I don’t have the best colors....
