Petitjean Magic Tools. Wtbw

It's hard to find the real magic tools for a reasonable price, even used...

I've got these clips from China, they work fine while you wait for that bargain on the real thing.

$4.79 for a set of 5 clips varying sizes, free shipping

I just received two sets of these, I wanted to have matching pairs for whatever reason, I ordered them on Chugbug27's previous recommendation,   but I was surprised at the quality, they are clear enough to see through and all 10 close perfectly on several different kinds of feathers.  Not sure that I'll ever use more than the two middle sizes for the flies I tie but the tiny ones would be nice on tiny flies. They clamp much tighter than bulldog clamps I've used previously.

Thanks Chug, for the recommendation months ago.  I think they were about a month in transit.

Glad you picked some up & like them, too. Their current price of $4.70 for the full set of 5 different sizes is a nice bargain on what really is a very good product.

Hi Barry,

Check out this guy.

https://www.54deanstreet.it/shop/category/petitjean-magic-tool-228

He's legit and will get you your product. You will pay overseas shipping but I don't know how much. You could buy multiple Petitjean tools or other things to justify shipping from Europe. I ordered Petitjeans new book direct from him and it only too about a week to arrive here in Los Angeles from Switzerland. I have his magic tool set and love it. I bought extra clips to mix materials more easily. I highly recommend them. You won't regret the purchase. I have seen the CDC multi-clamp thingy and to be honest I wasn't impressed. It's heavy and feels nice but in the long run I think the magic tool is a better buy. I am a bit biased because I got into CDC when that Leon Links' book "Tying Flies with CDC" first came out in 2002 and I learned about Marc Petitjean. It's a well made product and very smooth to use. He is one of my favorite tyers. Up there with Rene Harrop and Hans Weilenmann. Some of the early influences of my fly tying so take my word with a grain of salt.

@Artin that’s for the tip, I’ve actually  bought stuff from 54 Dean St in the past, problem is they’re in Italy and not cheap. I just purchased something from Italy and it took ages to get her and the package was damaged. I was hoping to find some Petitjean clamp used at a reasonable price, but no luck so I’m going to buy some of the very inexpensive clamps off eBay. Yep, they have to come from China but experience shows me their shipping is usually very quick, often just a few days

Cheers

Barry

I ended up buying those nice clear plastic clips from eBay for about $7 including postage. I would like the real thing but to expensive to buy new i was hoping to buy a regular set for between $40 and $60 but no sellers at any price!

Here are instructions for a home made Magic Tool:

You will need thick foam blocks (from a thick pair of foam sandals), an old credit card, and a set of bulldog paper clamps. Cut a straight slit in the foam blocks from end to end. The slit has to reach to both ends of the foam blocks to be able to release the fibers later.

Put the CDC fiber stems over the slit in the foam block and pull the fibers into the slit by their ends. If the plumes do not extend over the end of the block and cannot be pulled in, use the old credit card to push the CDC fiber stems into the slit.

Use the paper clamp in the place of the transparent Petitjean clamp to hold the end of the CDC plumes. Open the slit in the foam block to release the fibers and you are in business. The CDC fibers are lined up, cut off the stem(s) and place the fibers into the dubbing loop.

With this simple set of homemade and cheap bought tools you can do what the Magic Tool does. See the instructions below:

many thanks for the instructions, I hav bought some inexpensive clips from eBay for the pricely sum of $4.95 including postage from China

I would prefer the real thing but money is short for me

Barry
