troutfly7 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2005 what would be the best fly to use in an undercuts or to lure a fish out on a small stream
Steeldrifter 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2005 best way I have found to lure a fish out from under a undercut bank is with a streamer. Slap the streamer down hard as close to the bank as you can to get the fishes attention, then start jerk stripping it back aqay from the bank. I've pulled alot of fish out from undercuts this way. Guest Report post Posted March 23, 2005 Gotta agree with SD on that one. Later on in the season a well-placed terrestrial might coax one out. Another approach if there's an overhanging branch is to use a one of those small worm like catepillars that hang from the trees during certain times of the year. Just let it drag on the surface. Seen a few trout feed on those.
Pujic 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2005 Amen Steve! A streamer does the job well in this situation. If the fish are spooked, you can aslo cast the fly behind (downstream) of where the fish are holding under the bank, and strip it as close to the bank as possible, making sure they see it. Once you've stripped past the undercut, move the fly away from the bank. Good luck! Nick
appalachian angler (tn.) 0 Report post Posted March 23, 2005 I haven't gave it alot othought but since steve said it I have done the same quite a few times myself...especially with brookies. Hooper patterns will get 'em out too! A.A.

boba 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2005 No argument with any of the suggestions, and I sure have my problems with that situation. I tie well and fish less well. I would only add you might try a hopper to the mid/late season mix if there is grass in the area. One tip, regardless of season, would be to make sure you aren't too visible to the fish if it's a small stream situation. Kneel, bend or do whatever you can to make sure the fish can't see your casting. I can't kneel because of my knee problems but use cover if available or try just plain staying still for a long time and minimizing my casting motion upstream if I can. picketpin 0 Report post Posted March 24, 2005 I agree with Steve and Nick using streamers especialy a Black Nose dace works real well here on manitoulin for browns, bows and brook trout Mike
Shaq 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2005 in a cut bank situation, there is usually part of the current that pulls everything underneath. a wooly bugger placed well above the cut cast from an upstream position that is allowed to be pulled under the cut before stripped back is a good way to lose the bugger but also able to produce big-time. done right you can almost jig the bugger under the bank. There is a cut bank that I know of that you can grasp the roots and push your foot allt he way in and not hit the back of it.
lanvaettir 0 Report post Posted March 25, 2005 It really depends on the time of year but I like hoppers, stimulators and buggers on western streams.
