August Flies From the Vise

Recommended Posts

Been busy with these. Elk Hair Caddis, #12 & 14, from a variety of different elk patches. Two different patches came from @Mark Knapp, with much (belated) appreciation.

With hair from Mark:

Still the most effective O/C pattern I’ve fished.  Floats all day; as long as I don’t lose it I don’t have to change flies.

thread - UTC 140 burnt orange
core -  30lb mono
underbody - moose body hair
body - 2mm foam orange
underwing/head - 2mm foam rust
legs - medium rubber brown

Scott

I’ve posted SBSs for the standard H+F platform and Carnage bodies on this site; pretty much just a matter of marrying the two together.

Scott

Houston’s Cullinanes Muddler (variation)

I was so happy with the way the head spun out that it took me a minute to realize I forgot the wing and at that point I didn’t want to blade it off.  Since I’ll be fishing it for stupid cutts and not wary loch browns, I don’t think it will matter. Next one will have wing and a denser shoulder, probably dyed Mearns quail.  Here’s his video (with the wing!), if you’re interested.

hook - WFC Model 6 #6
thread - UTC 140 burnt orange
rib - small wire gold
tail - Golden pheasant crest
body - Ice Dub golden brown
body hackle - orange
shoulder hackle - grizzly dyed Silver Doctor blue (2 packs Koolaid Ice Blue Raspberry/ 1 cup water)
collar/head - deer hair dyed olive

Regards,
Scott

ESP (Extra Special Perdigon)

1793475119_ESPedited(final).jpg.4a5da884455c81f91de702cc9ff4f450.jpg

I wish I had a better camera, but I wanted to share a few flies this month despite the questionable picture quaility.

This perdigon variation has been a killer for me the last couple months. I've probably caught 60% of my fish on this pattern. I tie them big on size 10-14 jig hooks with an oversize copper tungsten bead. I use a fire orange translucent glass bead for the hot spot instead of flourescent thread which is what I think makes the fly work so well. I use a cream thread for the body and then use green and orange sharpies to shade the top so it has a two-tone look(hard to see in the photo).

Hook: Size 10-14 Jig Style

Head: 3.8mm Copper Tungsten Bead

Wing Case: Black Sharpie Coated with Thick UV Resin

Thorax/Hotspot: 2mm Fire Orange Translucent Glass Bead

Abdomen: Cream Thread with Black Wire Rib and Sharpies for Coloring (coated with several layers of thin uv resin)

Tail: Coq De Leon

Big thanks to everyone who shares their flies and knowledge on this forum. I get so much information and inspiration from these posts.

- Jason

Much improved, however, watch the length of hackle, it should’ve shorter than the wing. 2nd fly looks a little front heavy,it may “ head stand” on you. Try and get three hackle wraps behind the wing.
much better job, let’s see more!

Excellent!  Just the way it is meant to be tied.  I love those hooks for spiders.  They have a real classic look.
