[email protected] 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2020 I'm confused on that dropper rig with a hopper fly or i guess a dry fly or popper. Ok so i got a 4x tippet for a #8 hook fly. Now i wanna make a dropper rig tied to it , the hook at the end of dropper is #10 weighted nymph. Now the ? Is , with that dropper on would it be to heavy for the 3x tippet? Jaydub 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2020 To avoid sinking your #8 dry, consider a unweighted, lightly weighted, or a smaller nymph. I usually use a 14 or 16 nymph with this type of setup.
Poopdeck 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2020 Now we are all confused. Where did the 3X tippet come from? I'm with jaydub in that a size 10 weighted nymph seems a little big for a hopper dropper. I would also suggest it's not so much the hook size and tippet as it is the buoyancy of the material used for the hopper, the weight of the dropper and the water conditions. It would also seem you are way over analyzing everything about fly fishing. Keep it simple and go out, experiment and do. Only then will you will be able to weed out the voluminous, confusing and often contradicting BS in fly fishing.
chugbug27 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2020 For the type of flies you're talking about your tippet size should generally just match the hook size of the fly you're tying on to that tippet. https://howtoflyfish.orvis.com/choosing-equipment/equipment-articles/474-how-to-choose-the-right-tippet-size
flytire 0 Report post Posted August 15, 2020 i think youd be okay using the same 4x tippet for the dropper as youre using for the dry fly do not go to a larger tippet size for the dropper a size 10 nymph is not really that big and should be okay on 4x http://rivercityflyshop.com/PDF/Tippet_sizes.pdf

If you’re fishing a size 12 fly, divide by 3 and use 4X tippet. If you’re fishing a size 20 fly, divide by 3 and use 6X or even 7X tippet." https://theflyfishingbasics.com/fly-fishing-leader-and-tippet-what-why-how/ "A common rule that helps to determine what ‘X’ size tippet to use to attach your fly is to take the size of the fly, say a Size 16 Parachute Adams for example, and divide that fly size by 3."
