Are they not Stimulators? At any rate, very nice job on yours.
chugbug27 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2020 Thanks guys. 1 hour ago, Mark Knapp said: I like them both very much and must admit that the example with the fuller body appeals to me more. Are they not Stimulators? I agree, and yes it's a Stimulator -- the first, before Slattery thought up the name. I was hunting around for a version or two to tie, and came across that photo here (scroll way down): https://flyfishingthesierra.com/stim.htm I like it a lot better than the rest I've seen, and apparently Slattery chimed in with that website enough to provide the pic... I also found some useful tying comments from Slattery on the sparse grey matter forum here: https://www.sparsegreymatter.com/viewtopic.php?t=5853

The fish are that hungry when you find them in a group... and small snook in particular are hard on flies... Oh totally. I sell flies so I’ve gotta make them look nice. Most of the flies I tie for myself or fish myself look like Hellen Keller Tied them. In fact almost all my flies in my box, are the ones that I messed up on when tying for a customer... haha! dflanagan 0 Report post Posted September 19, 2020 Nice work, chugbug. I think I agree that a fuller body is more appealing but, man, you’ve done a great job all around, hackle especially.

Decent winging feathers, GP crest, silver pheasant body feathers, JC eyes, and any sense of proportion. Once I got the wings set I completely forgot to add the GP crest throat. Don’t have any silver pheasant nor JC eyes so couldn’t do those. This was more of a spur of the moment, “let’s see what I can do with what I’ve got” type things. I hope to improve. These streamers seem to be excellent for teaching thread control/discipline and proportion.

chugbug27 0 Report post Posted September 21, 2020 Closer to the mark. Changed hooks, which helped. Again, aiming for this: Mine: Almost forgot to mention, a BIG thank you to @Mark Knapp for the late season deer hair and @Rjohn7 for the paracord dubbing.
