Sandan 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2020 Getting in under the wire. Size 16 winged wet. Beats me if this is some known pattern. I can't really imagine it isn't, but I don't know the name if it is. Great month at the vise(vice?) everyone

I don't have any hen capes so I used some nat. brown strung rooster saddle. Looking for critiques. I tied in the peacock at the base of the Herl and it seems to give my issues with my taper (i.e. thicker abdomen than thorax). (pic cut for brevity) Tie the herl in at the tips. Well cut off about a 1/2-1" of the tip, that's usually pretty brittle. Depending on your hook size you might want to use more than one herl. In that case, what I usually do it cut and tie3 in. Then twist 'em a few times and then wrap.

Usually the head (hook eye) is to the right and the tail is to the left. 😋 Other than that it's perfect.

Once your collar is thinner, your white biots will lay more flat to the body.

Meeshka 0 Report post Posted September 30, 2020 For realistic wings and tails google " Frost Fly ". I do some how remember reading somewhere that the wings don't cast good, but I've never tried so I shouldn't really even comment on that.

They had some very realistic looking bodies and wings. I'm not really as much into the synthetic materials as much as I am naturals. I had the wings from an estate I bought so I thought I'd try them. Just trying a bunch of things to see what I like the most. I like the stuff I can make myself the most. Thanks.

As always constructive criticism is welcome and appreciated. It's that second pair of eyes that really help a person improve. 😙 BTW, those dubbed extended bodies rock
niveker 0 Report post Posted October 1, 2020 @TWall The Prince nymph looks good to me, especially the lie of the biot tails. I like what Sandan and chugbug27 said, also I like to tie in materials along the whole length of the hook shank to keep the bulk uniform. As to the hackle, in my experience a stiffer hackle on a nymph might not look better, but sometimes works better. You might want to try cutting off the hackle fibers on the top to allow the white biots to lay flatter.
