@Jaydub

yes cut off hook

Thanks. I am familiar with that technique. When I looked at you photo, it looked to me like another hook shank sticking out the back of the fly with the trailer attached.

Got some feedback from the originator, put it back on the deer hair lathe and turned a slightly smaller and longer head.

The longish chamois looking strip on the tail probably doesn't hurt, either, if that is indeed what the material is.  When wet, it has a texture and action like none other.

Pretty much, it's Fly Suede from Pat Cohen. What I really like about it is that it moves and wriggles really well but is also sort of neutrally buoyant in the water. At rest, it doesn't just sag/flop down.

Nice flies and vise!  That looks like the Orvis edition HMH Standard?

Yes, it's an old Orvis Edition Spartan. I've had it for a long time, I'm not even sure if they do those green Orvis models anymore.

Woolly Bugger.

Is the hackle on this fly a little too extravagant/oversized?

Variant of an Art Flick Dun Variant.

The tail and hackle look very pale in the photos, but they are in fact (dyed) medium dun.

No, it will work just fine.

When the fly is wet it will lay flatter to the body, and along with the tail it gives life to the fly.
