October Flies From The Vise

My first two Micro Game changer buggers! These are a tough one for me but I am enjoying learning!

I tied the yellow one last week and just tied the black and white one tonight.

Hey @SBPatt, looks good great as usual. Does the blue kool aid dye stay saturated on feathers or does it tend to wash out? And how much material can you dye with 2 packets? A whole hen neck?

Thanks. I use the same steps to dye with Koolaid as I do with Rit dyes; the vinegar allows the protein substrate (fancy talk for feathers, fur, hair) to absorb the dye and locks it in.  I haven’t had any issues with dye bleeding or washing out; I don’t fish saltwater with any of the flies I’ve used dyed feathers on, but don’t imagine that would cause a problem, either.
I’ve dyed whole pheasant rumps with 2 packs of the Koolaid and had some left over in the dye bath so I think you could dye at least one hen neck, probably more than that at a time. Having said that, for larger, bulkier items, the soaking time should probably be increased to insure the dye gets into all the fibers; longer time in the microwave can get the bath too hot/too long and potentially damage the substrate - it might be better to do them on a stove/hot plate at a lower temp longer ‘til the dye is absorbed. I’ve definitely found that to be the case when dyeing deer hair; more time is needed to get the color to be soak in thoroughly.

Regards,
Scott
