breambuster 0 Report post Posted January 1, 2021 How do you guys know how tall your split wings should be? I saw a video where a guy used a card with a line drawn on it for each hook size, but when I looked it up, the guy wanted a small fortune for the thing. Ouch! I’m wanted to work on my Catskill Dry Fly skills and especially tying in wings with wood duck flank feathers. Thanks. BB

Moshup 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2021 A popular choice on the Catskills is to make the wing a tad longer than the shank.
Sandan 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2021 @breambuster make your own card. It's easy. Get an index card. Two hooks for each size. Set the hooks on the card mark the two points, draw a line.
breambuster 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2021 Moshup, I watched a YouTube video the other day where the guy said to make the wings as long as the shank plus the eye. BB

Moshup 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2021 The question is on the height of the wings on Catskill dries.
flytire 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2021 and the above answers wont work on "catskill dries"? watch the movie on how to prepare the wood duck feathers for the wing and around the 7:45 time he measures the wing watch umberto tie some great "catskill style" flies (71) Down By The River - Fly Tying Videos - YouTube
Moshup 0 Report post Posted January 2, 2021 It would appear to me that he is making his wing measurement from behind the eye to the bend of the hook. Bend included. No need to bolden any words as I can still read fairly well.
