vicrider 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2021 Last set is probably waiting for me at PO and I'll get these turned around. What I'm wondering is how you guys store flies when you're down into the 20s? I have stored them carefully in slit foam boxes but what I have now is some boxes with magnetic tape in bottom. This seems to be a good way to store them but will make it hard to get them out to tie on while on water, as if I ever actually got to water and used this mighty mites. niveker 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2021 I have glued magnetic strips to one side of a foam, ripple fly box (one side flat, one side ripple foam. Tiny wets get put on those magnetic strips. Holds them well enough. I need to use my hemostats to pick them up and hold them to tie them on. Small dries either go into a box with the spring lidded compartments, or a slit foam box, depending on what they are. Although I rarely go below #22, and even those rarely. For non dry flies I've been using the Umpqua boxes with the slit silicon. They work great. Parachutes and the small dries, cheap slit foam or compartment boxes. Or if I'm lazy a fly puck that I get at the local shop when I drop some dough on materials.
vicrider 0 Report post Posted February 22, 2021 Do you have a tracking #? Still no flies and I'm to sort and return. Nick
vicrider 0 Report post Posted February 25, 2021 Okay, I'll sort flies and send them out tomorrow. One tier short but with a couple of doubles in there we'll all have a nice little bunch for those midge hatches. I know there are some well known tailwaters where anything bigger than a 20 supposedly scares the fish off since they think it's an eagle attacking. vicrider 0 Report post Posted February 27, 2021 Flies are on their way. It was not one of the easiest swaps to try to get a fair sorting for everybody. One dropout and lots of extras. Everyone should have their allotment plus some random helpings of some micro flies. Some of the flies made my 18 look like a bass fly but I also had a 26 parachute in there. Just be careful taking them out and handling them. The ones with a lot of hackle like Fishin' Bob's gnats will disappear faster than you can say "dang it". The actually bounce and you never know which direction. I have a magnetic box mine are cased in now but it's still not the system I'd want to use on the river. Woodenlegs 0 Report post Posted March 1, 2021 Got so awesome flies, not sure if I can ever tie some of these on the tippet
niveker 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2021 Got an incredible set of flies in the mail today, as someone who never really ties below #18, they are really remarkable. Thanks everyone who participated and @vicrider for hosting. Vicrider, it must have been a real PITA sorting those little guys out. I have to apologize for just tying mine together with stringed tags like I did, that must have made things worse for you. I typically like to put my flies in small zip bags, but I had run out, and the 2 wallyworlds I went to that morning were out of them also, and I was already late getting them to the PO, so I had to settle for those stringed tags. I will try to get some photos up of this great set over the next day or two.
Sandan 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2021 I received my tiny swap flies today. What a treat that was. To all who participated and particularly to Nick who coordinated the whole shebang I say a hearty thank you and great job.
vicrider 0 Report post Posted March 2, 2021 Since you mention it niveker your mess was a real PITA. I'm too nice to bring it up but you started it. I don't know quite what you were thinking but all I had was a mess of thin strings, tiny tags, and some very nice flies in a big tangle in a very small container. Once I got it sorted out I tossed all your tags and just put the flies in without toe tags so any one finding some loose flies floating around they might be one of the offerings of niveker. The flies were darn nice once I straightened them all out and just hope I didn't lose any in the process. ps...Sure would be great if you could get some pics for us. Things just didn't work for me getting pics this time.
