February Flies From the Vise

Blue Wing Olive

Hook: TMC 100, size 18

Tail: Dun 

Body: Olive super fine dubbing

Hackle: Dun 

Notes: Simple pattern, yet with the batch I tied I kept making minor mistakes, but of the variety that the trout/salmon probably won't notice the difference, but we do.

Gilly variations      hook size 10 bead head, tail feather barbs. abdomen red floss, thorax another color floss. wing blue peacock neck feathers barbs. dry fly hackle 

This uses dry hackle to push water.

Little Yellow Stone Dry (Polly Rosborough) Variation

Hook: Daiichi 1280, size 12

Thread: Danville 6/0, Yellow

Egg sack: Poly yarn, red

Tail: Hackle fibers, Grizzly died yellow

Aft Hackle: Ginger

Rib: Danville 3/0 Monocord, Yellow, closely spaced

Abdomen: Uni-stretch, chartreuse

Fore Hackle: Ginger

Wings.  .......    Woodduck flank

Hackle. .......    Metz speckled light dun

So here is a Smokey Dun Quill Gordon.

Hook.     ..... Varivas 2000s.    Sz 12

Thread.  ..... Utc 70. Rusty brown

Tail.       .....  CDL

Body.     ....   Stripped peacock

Wing.   ......  Woodduck flank feather

Hackle.  ....  Collins Smokey dun rooster cape.  Grade 3. *** Very happy with the sz 12 hackle. Harder to come by these days.
