I'll have to invest in some new pheasant as the stuff I have is mostly picked through and small. Thanks Should have mentioned... The flank is from Hareline. Bag full of crooked feathers, but good enough to wrap on a hook. The pheasant is from the upper (or back) part of a rump patch, the feathers with the longer fibers. SBPatt 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2021 Spruce Moth Jingler (Williams variation) Another idea I borrowed from Chris Williams; although the colors may be a bit off for a Spruce Moth, I haven’t found the fish to be real fussy when the emergence is on. hook - BVFT Dry #12 thread - Veevus 8/0 tan rib - x-small wire gold body - bleached peacock herl underwing - Congo Hair shiner tan wing - mottled hen/resin hackle - dark ginger collar - sharptail grouse Regards, Scott

Baron 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2021 Bimini, I'm glad for the clarification. I had also bought a bag of flank and it is working fine for size 8 or smaller. If I continue I'll want figure how to scale it up to #4 or even #2. I see that the bag of loose pheasant that I bought contained only a few of the long feathers while the rest are pretty well picked through. The smaller Rump feathers may work for size #12 for spring Gills. Below: Size #8, 3x Diachi streamer hook, Pink thread for Crappy and Gills
niveker 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2021 7 hours ago, SBPatt said: Williams’ Callibaetis Softhackle (variation) Nice tie, but that hackle steals the show! #33 Greentail Hook: @ 12 or 14, taken from the recycle bin Thread (thorax): Ash Thread (tail): Green Thorax: Hare’s Mask, well mixed Hackle: Bobwhite Quail, top of the wing A brighter green tail, I think, would look better. Many variations of this old fly. Here is the one I loosely followed, from T. E. Pritt, 'North Country Flies', p.32 No. 33. GREENTAIL (Grannom Fly). . Hook. 1 WINGS. - Hackled with a feather from the inside of a Woodcock's wing, or from a Partridge's neck, or from under a Hen Pheasant's wing. BODY. - Lead coloured silk, twisted with a little fur from a Hare's face. TAIL. - Green silk, wrapped over lower part of body. This fly does not last very long, and appears to be quite extinct for the season in about eighteen days after its first appearance on the water. It is not always to be relied on as a killer, although, now and then, trout will make a dead set at it, and take nothing else. It kills best in the morning and evening, on warm days. The tag and rib is shown counterwound in the dressing plate from The North Country Fly, by Smith but I wind it forward when there’s nothing to “bind” I also added a bit more taper to the lug to give me a bit more floatation in the surface film but haven’t a clue if it really makes a difference or just in my head. tetraodontoxin 0 Report post Posted February 19, 2021 This is a "Ronn lucas, lesson 2" tied with materials on hand. Hook: daiichi Alec jackson steelhead irons, size three Tag: oval tinsel tail: golden pheseant crest. I made a mistake and forgot herl, Body: half silver flat tinsel, half red floss Rib, oval tinsel Throat: pink schlappen wing: Ozark barred quill Head: black, courtesy of inkzall pen Thread, danville 140 white, flymaster plus My wing tying still needs some work, but getting better after finding some really good detailed videos, I like seeing techniques done rather than just reading. I seam to pick them up quicker. I used white thread and painted the head black, I liked it better than tying with black thread. I am doing an experiment I tied with this thread a bit, now I am using veevus 6/0 black. takes some getting used to, but its ties very different from the danville. So need more ties to make a choice.
