Iron Blue Dun

I really like this one.

Where do you find natural mole fur (other than the back yard)? And is it gray? Or brown or black?

Last night I tyed this with a hen feather I found in the hen house yesterday. This was my first time tying a Fly with a Hackle feather

#16. Hook

Olive brown dubbing

8/0 Black thread

Hackle is from one of my Production Red Chickens.

@chugbug27 it’s a dark grey.  I’ll send you some along with a couple of other items. It’s a must have for soft hackles.

Nice and welcome.

If you can find some small feathers with a bit of mottling out in that henhouse of yours, you could tie a killer soft hackle pattern with that color dubbing.

I’m going to try that

Some more light and a neutral background (I use a piece of craft foam) that doesn’t distract from the subject will help. Enjoy seeing your flies; please keep them coming.

Regards,
Scott

Don't tie so far into the hook bend  especially don't fill it up with dubbing or you'll lose fish more often.  That fly should be smaller on that hook , try to end (start tying} the body just above the barb. If you are going past the barb then keep it real thin such as a tag made of tinsel or thread/floss etc. Also for that fly try tapering the body ( thin at the rear to heavier near the bead ). Use half the dubbing you think you need then remove a little from that amount.  Filling up the gap of the hook with dubbing etc. only helps the fish escape. You're on your way , keep up the good work.

Advice is pretty much spot on.👍

I would also suggest following a known fly pattern so you have something to compare your fly to when you are done. I don't really recognize what you are trying to tie or the purpose of those white tags at the back of the fly. What are they supposed to represent?
