July Flies From the Vise

Nice Cate's Turkey! That fly used to be a killer on back country lakes. I keep a couple in by fly box, but don't tie it on as often as I should.

For some reason, I felt a need for a little self-flaggelation. Plus with pronghorn is you can spin it with finer thread and not pop off (too often); minus is it’s a bit thick, making it harder (for me) to get a real tight body. It’ll still float and after a fish or two they all look like I ran them over with the truck anyway.  Change color to suit your needs; this one was based on a piece of hackle left over from a failed attempt at a green drake variation.

hook - WFC Model 4 #10
thread - Uni 8/0 chartreuse
body - pronghorn dyed olive (1 Tbs Rit golden yellow/1 cup water overdyed with 1 Tbs Rit Golden yellow, 1 tsp Rit dark green/1 cup water)
hackle - grizzly dyed chartreuse

Regards,
Scott

What I'm thinking is an Atherton style dry. Based on his #1-#7. All natural materials, blended natural fur dubbing, Catskill style wings and extra small gold oval tinsel. I used CDL for the tails cause I didn't like the spade hackle I picked from the necks. Oh yeah, size 16, dark barred ginger hackle. Dubbing: mixed natural mink/X-tremely fine natural PMD and dun beaver.

Atherton would have been happy with that one.  Would have liked to have met him.

@Moshup thank you. I certainly hope he would have. An interesting but too short life.  What a terrible way he died.

@Sandan  Maybe too young but I’ll take his manner of death any day and consider myself lucky.

Caribou is much finer than the pronghorn; spins and packs well, making for a tighter body.

hook - WFC Model 3 #10
thread - Veevus 8/0 tan
body - caribou
hackle - ginger

@Moshup,  Me, I'd like to be about 97 or 98 and shot by a jealous husband.  Nice tie too.

Everyone else excellent work as always!
