Li'lDave 0 Report post Posted August 21, 2021 A few impressionistic crabs to complement a bunch of shrimps. I've posted them before, but just in case. A couple of good mates were looking for a fly that would suit some of our local flats dwellers... a few tweaks on Del's merkin and the VGDC was born (Voltzy's Goldy Destroyer Crab)... This batch contains a couple of size 2's as well as 1/0s... and a colour combination that suits both Golden trevally and permit. Marabou Rooster cape feathers Epoxy/mono eyes Yellow round rubber legs EP fibre or similar (e.g. congo hair) Large dumbbell eyes

Rocco 0 Report post Posted August 23, 2021 Philly, Your ties hit on an approach I've only been thinking about. The size 4s is larger than I was planning and the hackles a little more generous but they look lethal. Do you fish them on on a single hander or two hander? In slow or fast flows -- I'm assuming they are for river smallies. They might even work for steelhead --although the temptation would be to add JC eyes and a little flash. Pls let us know how they do for you on your trip and best of luck. Rocco e

Thanks- I'm not sure either but they hatch on the Swift in September. They look like the black flies from the spring - maybe a little smaller.

Chasing_Tails 0 Report post Posted August 23, 2021 Flutter Shrimp Hook: Kahle, #2 Thread: Uni-Thread 6/0, tan Tail: SF fiber, shrimp Antennae: Krystal Flash, gold Eyes: Mono, large, black Head: Ice Dub, UV tan Hackle: Saddle hackle, tan grizzly Legs: Sili-legs, gold barred Outriggers: Hard mono, 50lb Body: Palmer Chenile, small, tan Back: Swiss straw, tan Rib: 0.2mm wire, brown Weight: Lead dumbbells, small The design of this fly is to be worked in quick short strips that will pull the tail off of the bottom first causing the fly to rotate on the strip. On the fall the fly will sink tail first with a fluttering action of the body and legs as they trail vertically. The hard mono outriggers by the legs provides stability to keep the fly upright once it lands back to the bottom.
