DFoster 0 Report post Posted September 28, 2021 Great flies this month all! This fly was super effective for me last September and October and has it continued trout this year gaining effectiveness as we move into Autumn. It's a soft hackle but it floats like a cork. I fish it just like a dry fly. It typically orientates so that the hook shank is pointing down at the bottom so all those legs are spread out on the surface- Killer! English tradition says it's a beetle imitation but to me it looks more like a dead brown spider or a daddy longlegs. It's now one of my "go to" flies anytime terrestrials are around. T.E. I took a nice rainbow this past Saturday fishing it on the swing. I like your idea of fishing it dry. I'll have to give that shot.

It really wasn't an idea as much as the trout were hitting it on the surface before it was waterlogged enough to sink.

Interesting, as that one rainbow I caught practically flew out of the water as the fly reached the surface at the end of its swing.
DFoster 0 Report post Posted September 29, 2021 Here's another classic that has been really productive for me this month against Brown trout, especially on the rise at the end of the drift. I lost 3 of the 4 I had in my box so it was time to tie more. On these I used iridescent black schlappen feather fibers for the collar hackle though the photos don't show it well.
