Thanks, Sandan, for the kind offer, but I think I'm going to change tack slightly.

Searching a bit, I see Mike Hogue on his Etsy page sells a square of Australian possum dyed burnt orange, supposedly close to what Mr. Betters used, and reasonably priced.  I think I’ll order a square to have at least a live baseline for color reference, and go from there.  From what I can gather, there seems to be a wide range in color even in the original from the Betters,  given the nature of the natural material. In the meantime, this’ll do.  In the past I have used the hair from my lab/hound dyed orange as a base and mixed with some other dubbings on hand, but now want something closer to the original.  More of a fun quest on my part than a belief in a mythical material.

You're more than welcome. Good luck. If you change your mind hit me up.

thread - Uni 6/0 black
tail - deer hair dyed olive
body - dubbing olive
shoulder - pheasant rump dyed olive
wing/head - deer hair dyed olive

Hmmm. There's an old guy down the road building a big boat, surrounded by all kinds of animals.

Playing around with a variation of some patterns I’ve seen.  Didn’t really expect anything to come of it so I didn’t shoot the tying sequence; not crazy about the thread color and may look at alternatives to the sharptail shoulder but it has possibilities.

hook - WFC Model 3 #12
thread - Veevus 8/0 tan
shuck - Congo Hair brown
rib - UniStretch brown
abdomen - dubbing tan
wing - Congo Hair Baitfish grey
thorax - dubbing tan
hackle - ginger grizzly
shoulder - sharptail grouse

This would be a good place to use it; I’ve run in to a few of the bugs (Hecubas) here.

Scott

#12. Fluke pic; only reason the place isn’t it’s usual mob scene is because a grizzly was feeding on a dead bison about 1/4 mile away, which I didn’t know at the time.

Scott
