Alc609 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2021 1 hour ago, SBPatt said: Nice fly. What did you hackle it with? Looks like squirrel. Regards, Scott It is a dubbing I used from Fly Tyers dungeon, I split the thread and added the dubbing and brushed out. It was a practice job. You really think it looks pretty good? I think I need to contrast wing color some, maybe bleached hair
SBPatt 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2021 Yeah, it’s a nice effect; kinda looks like Charlie Craven’s Mugly Caddis. You can tie the next one with a lighter wing and see which one the fish like better. Regards, Scott

upnorthtier 0 Report post Posted November 5, 2021 buck bug (natural brown hackle) not much for materials here, messy to tie but fun hook- tmc 3761 or mustad 3906b size 8 to 16, tmc 3761 size 10 here thread- uni 6/0 tan tail and body- deer hair hackle- brown undersized by 1, you want to keep the hackle the size of the hook gap A few tips. Static is the enemy when spinning hair, I always have a bounce dryer sheet when spinning hair, I rub my hands, arms, tools and materials with it. After tying the tail in ill spin a smaller pinch of hair with the butts facing the rear of the hook and trim it right away, then ill tie in the hackle and keep on spinning, photos below. so many variation of this fly can be tied, different color hair and hackle, non toxic lead wraps for subsurface. That's a lot of great tying. There's about 2000 flies there, 6 to 7 dz per. I got a injury at work in mid June, I was clearing a lot for the next house build and the chainsaw kicked back and got my knee. Cut my inner quad tendon, I was off work for a couple of months so I had time to kill, tying those flies kept me occupied, was good for the mind. I'm still having a hard time with stairs, I saw an orthopedic surgeon and he said if it wasn't for covid I would have got surgery, now I'm going to physio 3 times a week and its getting better slowly, probably be limping forever I think.
