November Flies From The Vise

368 years old?       "The Soldier Palmer dates back to very early fly fishing times. Possibly as old as the early 17th century, it was well known and noted by Izaac Walton in his Compleat Angler 1653".  

SOLDIER PALMER 

HOOK: #12 1XL 1XS STANDARD NYMPH

THREAD: #70 RED

TAIL: 8 STRANDS RED FLOSS

ABDOMEN/BODY: RED FLOSS

RIB: OVAL TINSEL -GOLD

HACKLE: BROWN COCK DRY FLY- USE THE LONG BARBED SOFT END OF THE FEATHER

HEAD: S.N. HARD AS NAILS

@RickZieger - thanks Rick.  I think I know what you're talking about, and I may have some in green and some in gold I picked up at the dollar store a while back.  I'll have to put those on the list.

My top-producing fly, along with his CDC Carrot Fly (which is best in the evening when hatch activity picks up).

However, I do the version that's in his book, Tactical Fly Fishing, which has pink ice dub collar and red wire as the rib (and I think red thread on the front(?) - I'm at work, writing about fly-tying).  And I use Baetis colored CDC.  I have no idea if these things matter, but for me, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.  Will try to leave a photo when I get home.

tag - tinsel gold 
butt - Depth Ray fluoro red 
tail - yarn chartreuse 
rib - Mirage Flashabou opal
body - dubbing dyed golden olive (4 Tsp Rit Golden Yellow, 1/2 Tsp Rit Camel/1 cup water) 
body hackle - dyed golden olive/yellow 
wing- deer hair dyed fluoro yellow (2 Tsp Rit Lemon Yellow, 1/4 Tsp Rit Neon Green/2 cups water)
shoulder - golden pheasant body feather red
