MuskyFlyGuy 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2021 Norm, I really like the looks of the Jungle Cock. It looks like it would be an effective multi species fly. All those excellent RC gave me an idea that I am too old to implement. Does anyone have the interest in starting a thread with a pattern. Other people would tie their version and post a picture of it. People could start other threads with different patterns. We could see individual interpretations of flies and see if there are regional variations. Tom

Musky, Just start a thread with your own pictures of your version, then ask others to post their versions of the same fly. You post on here often enough that the "I'm too old for this Sh##" excuse doesn't work !!!😉

terp 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2021 SBPatt, You use a lot of chukar -- something I've never owned and that I haven't seen in too many patterns. Can you say where you buy it, why you like it so much, whether it's easy to use, how you die it, etc.? Your flies are awesome so I'm thinking of maybe adding some chukar to my arsenal. Thanks. Can you say where you buy it, why you like it so much, whether it's easy to use, how you die it, etc.? Thanks for the kind words. I’ve been playing around with flies from Ireland and the U.K. the past few years; many of the patterns, including some neat Irish lough ones, use French partridge flank feathers. I considered purchasing some, but the cost, with shipping factored in, was prohibitive; looking thru my materials, I came across a chukar skin that had flank feathers like the French. Look online and you’ll find vendors that carry chukar skins or just the flank feathers; the costs are pretty reasonable on this side of the Pond. They’re not the easiest feathers I’ve worked with, running a scissors blade along the quill to fold back the fibers definitely helps, but the markings make for very buggy flies. Dyeing them is no different than any other feather; here’s the SBS I put together for the process I use. Hope this helps and hope you enjoy tying with chukar; I’d love to see you post some flies here. Regards, Scott
fshng2 0 Report post Posted November 23, 2021 I decided to tie a few midge emergers; starting with a #18 and worked my way down to a #28. (I do use magnifiers) This one is the Matthew’s Zelon Midge see Tim Flagler's video. I showed my wife and she said "so you're tying fruit flies now?" I laughed and said I think fruit flies are smaller. She said I saw a dead one over on the counter. I collected it and compared it to the fly and was surprised. I guess I'm tying fruit flies now. Kim I was going to use some pearl tinsel chenille or something similar, but couldn't find any locally so I used some embroidery floss from Hobby Lobby. It has a metallic shine to it...blue opal was the color I believe.

I really like how each fiber of the feather has this brilliant contrast in it. Or maybe it's just your photographic skills(?). Have you ever dyed a Hungarian Partridge skin the same way (I ended up with an extra but also crave browner version vs. the natural grey).

I contested the charge with my credit card company and magically my shipment arrived within a week. They have a great selection but I'm not going through that experience again. niveker 0 Report post Posted November 24, 2021 @terp I've only used them that one time. I would recommend them on the basis of that one transaction. I picked up two bird skins, two raw hides, and a small patch of black bear, a piece from an skin rug they were selling. I thought the quality of the fur and feathers was good, all were nice and clean, they even smelled good. Shipping was a lot faster then I expected, and postage was reasonable. The skins, being raw, were cased, so I had to cut them to size myself, and then comb them out, but definitely a good deal for the price
