Octopus  Variant

Scott, the pheasant rump always looks great.  How does it hold up to fish?  I know that Coq De Leon is a more "rugged" tailing material than pheasant tail, and some people have started tying their PT nymphs with brown dubbing intead of actual PT for the same reason.  I personally think the tiny texture of PT fibers helps with the presentation, but it does seem to get sliced easily by fish teeth.  Just curious what youv'e seen while fishing some of these flies with pheasant rump.  Thanks.     PS your photos already inspired me to start using this material, but I haven't fished it yet.

Great question. I think the rump fibers are a bit more durable than tails are, but I can’t quantify that; I’ve used rump fibers as tails on some flies, usually larger ones than the smaller (#16-22) PTs I normally fish. Different application when wrapping a feather as hackle as opposed to tying just a few tail fibers on the back end - strength in numbers and all that.

It drove me crazy to see the tails disappear from my pheasant tail nymphs after a few fish, but then the flies still kept catching fish so I didn’t mind as much; they weren’t aesthetically pleasing any more but still effective and I’d fish them until there was nothing left but copper wire and a bit of thread.

Scott

Gold Ribbed Hare’s Ear

Winged Wet Fly

Ribbing - Oval gold tinsel

Body - Natural rabbit-not plucked *

Hackle - Formed by the long fibers of unplucked rabbit fur as it is wound on. *

* The phrase ‘unplucked rabbit fur’ from the Trout recipe listing refers to not removing guard hairs from the dubbing as it is wound on the fly, but rather leaving them intact to create a ‘buggy’ appearance.

Greaser Shrimp

Hook: Octopus short shank, #1/0

Rear body: Estaz, standard, peach

Legs: Sililegs, amber/gold flake

Underbody: 7 wraps 0.020 lead free wire

In aviation, a "greaser" is a near perfect landing where you barely know you have touched the ground. As the time of year where the redfish will begin moving up shallow on the mud flats with clear water, a near perfect presentation is required and any extra disturbance can send them quickly running back to the deeper water. This fly is designed to land very lightly on the water, and combining it with a long 12ft. leader makes it extremely stealthy, atleast until you want the redfish to see it right off it's nose.
