hopperfisher 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2022 I was fly fish only...and dries only when I was in CO...OR is different, I fly fish with wets only for steelies and SRC and gear fish with beads, bait and jigs for both steelies and salmon...I like getting bites and I take home any hatchies up to my limit
The Mad Duck 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2022 90/10 for me. I always have a spinning rod with me though. Sometimes the wind picks up and fly fishing is a pain. I'm a fisherman first and foremost.
skeet3t 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2022 I fly fish the majority of the time. I use baitcasting and spinning tackle when fishing for carp and buffalo.

DFoster 0 Report post Posted January 24, 2022 Before taking up fly fishing I spent years Kayak fishing for Largemouth on lakes with bait casters and spinning reels. I still own all the stuff but it's been years since I've used it. I have no bias against anyone fishing in any legal way they choose, it's your free time and you should fish with a method that you enjoy. Treat caught fish humanely and with respect and you'll never hear a word from me about how you caught them. For whatever the reason I have a passion for fly fishing on moving water. There was a time when I fished both, then one day I realized I was having more fun catching 6" Bluegills and fall fish with my fly rod than I did catching much bigger bass with my spinning rod. Being part of a big, close family while working full time and playing music with 2 bands, my fishing is often limited by other obligations. When time is available I'm always going to reach past my traditional tackle to grab a fly rod and head to a stream. Wild trout are my favorite when I have the 30 minutes to an hour to drive out to the local cold water streams. If were talking and hour after work then I'm perfectly happy to fish the many warm water streams I'm fortunate to have nearby. Fall Fish, River Herring and sunfish have provided me with many, many hours of enjoyment over the years.

FlannelCladlad 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2022 I was raised on the Lake Erie Islands running walleye charters with my father. I still take the lady out panfishing, but if I'm being honest I have kind of done it all on spin and trolling gear and was looking for something more in-depth. Came across a ragged copy of "Trout Bum" by John Gierach about 4 years ago and slowly began the process of accumulating fly gear. This is my preferred way to fish now and I don't see that changing. Gene L 0 Report post Posted January 25, 2022 I only fly fish. I don't have any other tackle for fishing. I probably miss a lot of fish that would fall to a Mepps Spinner, but that's the way I fish for trout, bass, bream...even catfish, although I don't fish for them. Mark Knapp 0 Report post Posted January 26, 2022 I spear fish, ice fish, I use bait, spinning gear and fly rod. I enjoy fly fishing the most so when I can do that, that's what I do. When your water is frozen for six months out of the year it's tough on a fly-fish only kind of guy.
Micke.H 0 Report post Posted January 27, 2022 Only fly fishing here😃
FliesbyNight 0 Report post Posted January 29, 2022 Fly is my preferred method, simply because I find it relaxing and enjoyable. There was a time I was fly rod only because I was learning to fly fish. The conditions here are sometimes not conducive to the fly rod and especially so in the surf. I started coming up with excuses why I should not pull out the fly rod today and wasn't learning anything so I put up the spinning and casting gear for a while until I could cast in anything less than a gale. Now I know when the weather or other conditions are beyond my ability so I'll grab something else and just fish.
caddis16 0 Report post Posted January 30, 2022 Only FF for me. And only on flies that I tied (and from swaps). The day I decided to be a fly fisherman I gave all my spinning stuff away and never looked back. I started tying the next day with a cheep tying kit. I have never bought a fly. I had a very long dry spell before I started catching fish cause I learn slow.
