February Flies From The Vise

Recommended Posts

A couple of 2X2 nymphs today.  And, YES, technically, there are 3/4 materials in the Green Drake pattern BUT, I'm going by my own Ark Swap rules that state that metal wire as well as metal beads/cones are counted as FREE materials - like the thread and hook) so the lead and gold wire don't count in this total.  Any 2X2 sticklers can just note this down as a 2X2+!😗

Green Drake Nymph - A pattern from Fred Bridge of York, PA1948039869_GreenDrakeNymph.thumb.jpg.4d92d7964d494517531fe81d90ae1408.jpg

Hook - Mustad 9671, 10

Thread - cream (or light Cahill)

Weight - ~12 turns of .015 lead/lead free wire

Tail - wood duck flank (can substitute lemon wood duck as well)

Rib - gold wire

Body - cream fur dubbing, picked out after the rib is added  NOTE: a base of yarn can be added to build up the body before the fur is dubbed

Wing - same as tail

Fledermaus - This is actually a pattern from Jack Schneider that he developed in the 1940's.  Jack developed this pattern on the Idaho/Montana border for the Henry, Wade, Cliff and Elk lakes to simulate shrimp, caddis, midge AND dragonfly nymphs (that's why the wide hook size range!).  Polly Rosborough actually modified this pattern for his famous pattern of the same name!

Fledermaus.thumb.jpg.5b15326e488ac00a6040853c41691356.jpg

Hook - Mustad 3906B, 4-16 <- NOT a TYPO!

Thread - black

Body - muskrat underfur dubbing

Wing - grey squirrel tail NOTE: There is a variation where red squirrel tail was used instead.

The ones I saw up in First Meadow weren’t bright green like others I’d seen nearby in Montana, although I did catch some fish on a green Hairwing Dun. Since the fish below the campground can be a bit picky, it may be worthwhile to show them something closer to the natural.

hook - WFC Model 3 #10
thread - Uni 6/0 olive Dun
tail - moose body
rib - tying thread
body - deer hair dyed dun
underwing - Congo Hair Baitfish Grey
hackle - dun
wing/head - deer hair dyed dun

Regards,
Scott

Thanks, George.

My setup is very basic - a 15 yr old Canon Powershot SD750 p&s that appears to have a decent macro, an Ott light + 2 clamp-on lights (LED), and a piece of grey craft foam as a background.   No tripod; all shots are hand-held.

That’s all there is to it.

Regards,
Scott

Good Morning Scott,

Very basic obviously works well.

My Nikon D3000 is ??????? years old and like you my setup is rather basic. A friend threw together a crude simple lightbox and I use that with the standard lens and a tripod I've had for 40+ years. My latest background is a slate roofing shingle which I learned from a friend in upstate New York.

Thanks for the feedback.

Cheers,
George
