February Flies From The Vise

A couple terrestrial 2X2's today

Black Fur Ant - An old simple ant pattern.  If tied with a black hackle it's Charlie Craven's pattern variation.  Can be tied in other colors - cinnamon, red, two color (red/black), brown, and even white, yellow & green!

Hook - standard dry, 14-20

Thread - black

Body Segments - black superfine dubbing

Hackle - grizzly dry fly

Deer Hair Beetle - Taken from The Art of Fly Tying by John Van Fliet.  Substitute other color deer hair for a brown beetle or Japanese Beetle pattern or brown deer hair and lighter colored body dubbing for a June Beetle pattern.

Hook - Mustad 94840, 10-16

Thread - black

Shellback - black deer hair

Underbody - peacock herl

Legs - 6 ends of black deer hair shellback, tied back

I do not own silk threads. I just substituted yellow uni stretch.

Brown gulf shrimp, variation of a “Mcfly angler”  pattern. His body uses kraken dubbing

Good ant's shown.  This was my last Transpar-Ant before the brook trout finished it off last summer.  Fine reminder to tie more this winter.

Antennae - 3-4 strands pearl Krystal flash ~hook shank length, tied above hook bend, fly is tied in reverse

Rib - 1-2 strands pearl Krystal flash

Body - white ostrich herl (or white rabbit or white marabou can be substituted)

Just messing around and things don’t go as expected.  I’m still looking forward to fishing it. 

Size 10 2XL nymph hook.

Black 70 ultra thread

body - small silver, chartreuse and red ultra wire twisted together 

Thorax - peacock herl

wing - black marabou with tips trimmed (because I skillfully moved some SHHAN from the head to the marabou tips with my fingers)

eye? - chartreuse over orange goose biots.
