Garden expansion

Recommended Posts

My in laws have a corral but no horses, and are letting my wife and I take it over. It usually grows over with weeds and had old lumber in it making it impossible to mow. I've been learning about no-dig gardening and ee decided to give it a shot. I've been saving cardboard from work shipments, and had 8 tons of compost delivered Saturday. We laid half of that yesterday manually because the CAT hydraulics were not working.

You have put some significant effort into developing that space for a garden. Hopefully you will have a bountiful year. Please post a couple of times throughout the year so we can see it’s progression to harvest.
Thanks,

Tom

Potatoes and onions coming in nicely. Have onion sets as well as seeds going. Spinach, lettuce, carrots, radish, beets, beans, and peas all sprouting. Our last frost date is typically 4/15, nights getting warmer and into the 50s, so I expect things to start growing faster very soon!

Do I see patches of snow?  😲  I can hardly look at any of the photos, for fear of seeing more snow !!!  😬

Other than that, looks like the kind of hard work that truly leaves you with a feeling of satisfaction.

Mike, we had a bit of snow before we spread the compost, but haven't had any for a few months.

Rich, cardboard as a weed blocker that will break down over time and let the garden roots through. This may give you a rough idea.

Cardboard and newspaper are both great weed prevention materials.  Weeds and grasses will not (can not) grow through it.  As long as it's in whole sheets, it keeps grasses and weeds from growing and keeps moisture from evaporating out of the soil.  Once it starts to breakdown/decay, it just adds nutrients to the soil.

Potatoes are about knee high, beans looking good. Root veggies are starting to take off as well. Need to hill up the potatoes soon, as they are starting to flower.

We had deck plants for a while but squirrels got into the tomatoes. One bite and ruined. Mothballs work, just keep them replenished. Squash was a disaster. The bloomed, started to form small squash and then rotted. Watched for over watering as they were on the deck. Moved them under the eaves. Fortunately, we have the markets close who will be getting our business.

Vine borers, destroyed all my squash more than once.

Thinned out radishes Sunday, started a ferment for relish with carrot, garlic, and onion. Hilled up potatoes this morning, as well as getting some bricks set out for the wagon wheel herb planter. Going to plant some more this evening when it's cooler. It has been crazy hot the last few days!

Potatoes are nearly done, some starting to yellow. Will let them stay a week or two in ground after dying off before pulling them. Not quite sure what im going to put in their place. Thinned out more radished, pulled some spinach and checked carrots which arent quite ready yet. Beans and peas looking great, have a couple of squash already and cucumbers are going to take off soon.20220518_181046.thumb.jpg.2f61c6aca8a5173a679a9e031cc82b63.jpg
