March Flies From the Vise

Recommended Posts

Here's a design from Irish fly tyer Alice Conba.

AC Pink Bug - Alice was taught to tie flies by her father who was a champion fly fisher.  She won the All Ireland Amateur Fly Dressing Competition when she was 17 years old and decided to become a professional tyer after that. She started her tying business in the early 1960's by hiring 10 local girls producing 1200 flies a day and sending them all over the world.

Thread - grey or olive

Overbody - clear Crystaline plastic (12 lb. clear mono used here)

120 flies per person, per day.  15 flies per person, per hour. 1 fly every 4 minutes, per person.    I can't tie 120 in a month, let alone one day.  I'm feel I'm doing well if I can punch 4 out in an hour.  LOL.

Nice tie.

Working on a spent caddis, what do you guys think?

I'd say that's pretty darn good.

Two questions: what are you using for the wings, and is the hackle clipped on the belly of the fly, and if not, why.

Just using wood duck feathers, wally winged, haven't got to trimming it yet, I may not because I like how buggy it looks.

"Ltd." is a typo. It is CDC. but my question is who are you going to believe? Me or your lying eyes?😉

That's what I thought, but I had to ask.

I like that emerger style with the near vertical wing and submerged body.  I have not tied them with the hackled legs, though.  I will give it that a shot, looks good.

About the speed I tie my favorite 2X2's!  That's why I use a calendar to time myself!

Thanks. I like that style too. I think that with a shuck and the appropriate color/body it might do double duty as a cripple. I'll say this, those tiny starling hackles are areal PITA, the stemsare just too dang delicate.
