  1. 9ft rod + height of the truck bed 3ft = tips of rods 12ft up. Wouldn't work around here. Too many over angling trees on the main road, on the road leading to good fishing spots there would be no way. Unless you take apart your rod but at that point might as well put them in a case. Just a thought. If I were to build something like this I'd go with how Mikechell said.
  2. I'm new myself, I started with e cheap eBay vise/tools. Poopdeck named off everything I started with, and its been working for me. If your trying to save money flytying may not be the best way. Materials can get expensive and the better you get at it, the nicer flies you want to tie, the nicer materials you need. One way you can save is pick the patterns you want to make and buy only those materials. Don't get me wrong I'm sure some people save money in the long run but it hasn't been my case. Cheers
  3. Just tie a fly. I did the same thing as you 2 weeks ago. I got bored of a hook and thread,in one day. So I picked a really easy fly pattern and just went for it. Tied it 10 times first 5 looked terrible and I'm getting better slowly. Here are the mistakes I did and will probably do many more time: - use something to contain materials and have only 1 hook out. - Don't crowd the head of the hook. - if your thread breaks don't take everything a part, you can continue from you last step just catch your thread. - use very little dubbing - dubbing wax helped me but some people don't like it. I used http://howtoflyfish.orvis.com/fly-tying-videos to find my first pattern. lots of good information there. One thing I did notice is for each fly there are 100s of way to tie it, so you really can't go wrong no matter what you do. The only judge of a fly is a fish. Other than that I just have fun with it. Best of luck
  4. Thanks. I'm down in the Halifax area. I love the Cheticamp area, we use to go camping in the highlands every summer as a kid, such a nice area. I haven't been in awhile, I hope to bring my boys up there one summer.
  5. I've been serving in the Canadian military as a medic for just over 10 years. Did multiple tours to Afghanistan. It's a hard lifestyle for my family but I wouldn't change a thing. To all my brothers in arm that are no longer with us, you will not be forgotten.
  6. I've been following and reading previous post on the forum for the past month, so I have a good ideal of how things work. Tiers with a good sense of humor help keep this site worth visiting. That's great, don't worry I don't take anything to heart. Looking forward to picking your brains and tying lots. Cheers
  7. Not that I ever caught in Nova Scotia. I'm sure there i, but probably in small number due to fishing pressure and invasive species. I know northern Ontario, northern Quebec, and Labrador do.

  9. Hey guys and gals, I'm a 31 yo just starting to get into fly tying and fly fishing. I've been fishing with spinning gear since my child hood, less now that I have 2 kids under 2. I've always wanted to try fly fishing but never got around to it. I'm starting with fly tying before fly fishing (opposite of most), I'm doing it this way because I can do it at home when kids are having a nap or at night. Hoppefully by next spring I'll be all geared up to go fly fishing and the kids will be a little older so it will be easier for my wife to handle them both. I've picked up a few book about fly tying - Orvis 101 tips, fly tying bible and just pre ordered essential trout flie. This site and YouTube have also been really useful to figure things out. I've already made the mistake of ordering a cheap vise but it's too late to return it. I figure it's good enough to get me started and I will likely upgrade later. I generally target trout as most of the lakes are Stocked here and I have a couple amazing rivers I also fish. I also fish for mackerel as the ocean is just down the street. Looking forward to asking ridiculous questions that have likely been asked and answered many times. Cheers
  10. double post, now to figure out how to delete doubles
