I do a different style of bait fish.   I do some using buck tail, but they're teaser patterns.  This my basic bait fish pattern.

These are some of the initial patterns I tied in this style.

Last year, Richmc held a tying class for his "Eyelash Yarn Streamers".  Here's an example

I prefer to tie with materials that are self tapering.  Those bait fish are tied with Senyo's Laser Dub.  It's good for small bait fish patterns, 3 inches and smaller.   It self tapers and already has the flash in it.  The material I use for larger bait fish patterns, 4 to 7 inches is Mirror Image.  Years ago Steve Farrar did a fly tying class for my salt water club, and one of the things he showed us was how to flash blend.  To get a good blend it takes about 10-15 minutes of mixing flash and material.  When done you have the flash already in the material, and material that is self tapering.  I get a bit OCD when I trim deer hair an bait fish.  I try to avoid both.

As you can see I never concern with real sharp shape tail. Notice in the top pic I cleaned a long hackle stem to get the black tail on the mullet.
Mikey heres some mesh stuff. I took one and slipped some tiny bubble wrap stuff in it to make it float. Just havent been able to try lotta my stuff but I bought me a lil bay boat the other day and put flyrod holders and 8 flyboxes in it. Waiting on Jan/Feb weather to end....

Been way while back I tried the combed yarn deal. I give up on its. Never could get colors to blend. Maybe with dynamite.

Ive become very fond of my own baitfish. A zonker or feather tail, with a little kip or buck to dissuade fouling. Then a flash and or chenille body with Congo or ep reverse tied at the head sparingly..to prevent covering the interior colors and flash. Combed and trimmed to length. Then some gel super glue for the eyes. Finishing with some liquid fusion around the face.

Yeh reversing the forward fibers is the trick to working fibers and flash. I do it with craft fur too; staggering. Keeping things sparse is another good point. Great idea about tails. Everytime we all post things someone learns something. Me!
