  1. I used to fish the east branch for many years near the old Hartwick Pines campground. The sections that I fished were off the old hiking trail and off the scenic drive. It gets far less pressure than the other branches of the Au Sable but over a period of time it has become infested with beaver damns which has really warmed up the water and really slowed down the fishing. That stated, it has been some years that I have fished there due to this problem and this was about the only stretched that I had fished so I do not know if this problem has occurred throughout the entire east branch system or if it has been rectified. Now as to flies, riffleriversteelheadslayer gave a good list for this stretch and I would also throw in some ants and beetles into the mix. If you do go there please give us a report on the river conditions as I would be interested in the condition of this stretch. Bob well i just got back and let me tell you, it was a disappointment. the brush is very overgrown not giving you a ton of casting room and the river is all full of beaver dams and the water is slower thaan my grandma. i tried all the flies that everyone on herte stated and all i caught was chubs, which is another indication that the water was warm. i, too was fishing about ten "road" minutes away from the hartwick pines area. i instead hopped over to the deward area and let me tell you. i caught 7 decent brookies and a few small browns and a guy down the river from me caught an 18 inch brown. so a good ending to the fishing trip. I am sorry to hear that. That section used to be very very good indeed. Like I stated, it has been many years since I fished that area and I have very good memories of many nice excursions fishing this stretch. Too bad. I am afraid that this will be the case of the east branch. With so many miles of prime water around the area, the main stream, the north branch and the south branch of the Au Sable and the Manistee there is very little chance of improving the east branch's conditions. Really too bad as it was a small gem amongst the big boys. The Deward area is one beautiful place for sure. Glad you did will there to make up for the east branch. Bob thanks alot for that information though. it was well worth a shot. Ya, thanks for east branch report. It saved me an exploratory trip that I have been putting off for a few years. Again thanks. Bob

  3. I do not use this vise but I always keep a good size magnet on my tying desk to pick up errant hooks that I drop now and then. Keeps me from stepping on them or the dog from finding one. Bob

  5. Steve I have been using PowerDirector for about three years now and I just upgraded to version 9 about four months ago. Like any video editing software there is a learning curve to it but I did a lot of research on editing programs and for what the program can do and the reasonable cost I think was worth my getting it. Like most video editing programs it works best on a main frame computer rather than a laptop. Like most programs it is easier to edit standard def rather than Hi def as hi def vids are huge files and are taxing on any computer but can be done for sure. You can download a free trial and look at it for yourself but I have no regrets in purchasing it for myself. Rather than listing pro and cons myself, go to this link which will list pros and cons for most editing programs. http://video-editing-software-review.toptenreviews.com/ There are two versions of PowerDirector 9, the Ultra 64 and the Deluxe version. If you have a 64 bit OS and would like to burn on BluRay disk or AVCHD to regular DVD then I would go with the Ultra version. I bought the Ultra version even though I have a 32 bit system now and it runs just fine. My next computer will be a 64 bit system so I bought the Ultra version with that in mind. Here is a link to the CyberLink site showing the differences between the Ultra and the Deluxe. I bought the hard copy so it would be easier to install when I get a new computer. http://www.cyberlink.com/products/powerdirector/compare_en_US.html Here are a couple of links on You Tube that show what Power Director can do: http://www.youtube.com/user/PDtoots#p/u/0/j-yAFqf3ILA Here is a link to a video that I made last year of my tradition bow kill. This was edited in PowerDirector so you can see a little of what it can do. I am still a novice but am getting better at it the more I do. There is more to the program than what I have used for sure but it is nice to have that as I progress more. One nice feature is that you make a slideshow from still photos. There are a lot of transitions and it comes with a photo editing program and you can add many special effects such as slow motion to your video. It will allow you to fix camera jitters, speed up videos, apply special effects like motion to your stills and many other that are to numerous to put in this post. Overall I am happy with my purchase. If you have any other questions let me know and I will try to answer them if I can. Bob
  6. I pretty much agree with all of the replies. I have been tying for some 35 years or so and for me it just kind of crept up on me like others said with time at the vice. I have always when I am tying on a fly to pick out the best looking one as I feel confident tying on a well made fly and I kind of realized after a lot of years at the vice that they all look pretty good. Another thing that I noticed it I usually take a break from tying after the season is over and it used to take me a couple of tying sessions to get back into the swing of things proportion wise. Now I notice that I usually start out good from the start. But.....tie tie tie tie amd tie some more. Bob
  7. You did have the Chicken Dinner while there? Bob
  8. Steelie, my wife has purchased the Bosscut Expression Gazelle which is the same type of machine and I have also given it some thought as soon as she get confortable with it. Bob
  9. Google found this: http://www.flyfishusa.com/fly-tying/antron.htm#Vis They still sell it, just have to look around a bit . I thnk I saw it listed in Chris Helms' catalog as well. I like it but I'm stll working on original bags. Hey thanks for the quick reply people !! I did order some at Flyfish USA and DoubleHaul you are right, Chris Helm has it also. Again Thanks!
  10. Looking for a source of Hi Vis materiel. I used to be able to find it just about everywhere but not recently. Looking for someplace where I can purchase some various colors. Thanks in advance. Bob
  11. It looks like the pics were adjusted with a program like Topaz Adjust to me. This is a very nice program and I have started using it but it is not good for all subjects and not everyone likes it. I like the results but my wife prefers the normal pictures. I like the pictures above a lot. Bob
  12. WYKnot We did talk about the Big Horns last year. Good memory. We drew out of state elk permits this year and being that is is a long time between draws we concentrated on hunting them with our recurves and wood arrows much more than the trout fishing. We had a hard time locating them in our area this year although I did have a chance of arrowing a calf on the first night of our hunt but passed at ten yards. Had one other bull interested and he came within 15 yards or so but was in too much cover to get off a shot but we had a great time altogether. Did not get in as much trout fishing as we had in other years but still had a good time of it. Caught a lot of cutts in the Tounge. Here is a pic of one of them. Getting back to Michigan I am waking up in the morning still looking for mountains. Bob
  13. WYKnot Nice picture. I have fished this creek on and off over the last 10 years while we have been there deer and elk hunting. We used camp by the creek for the first six years we hunted and fished there but we have been hunting near Fool's creek the last three years. Like you said it is a nice little creek to fish. We have also fished it near the town of Shell right down on the western side of the Big Horns. Nice fishing there also if you can dodge the big rocks and the faster current. We just usually fish the pools. Sad to say, we did not get there to fish this year as we were more involved in the elk hunting. Bpob
  14. Funny! Just happened to have one of those ancient containers lying around with some prehistoric 35mm equiptment and made one up yesterday. Works real good. Made sure you use the white one and not the black :yahoo: Bob
  15. Thought that the show was just okay. Was not real impressed with the scheduled seminars this year and I have always gone to the show to buy materials and over the years there have been less and less of them but if you are looking into a purchase of a driftboat or bamboo fly rod it was great. This may be my last show unless they have some good guests that I like to see. Just my opinion. Bob
