  1. I have also used Allen and I have had no issues with their hooks or beads. They ship fast and the quality seems to be equal to some of the other hook manufacturers. They dont have every hook you will want or need but they have a good selection that should cover your basic hooks to get you started.
  2. I have only noticed the problem with the 1, 2, or 3lbs tippet. Maybe they are the incorrect size. I didnt think of that and will try the other size next time I am at the shop. I appreciate everyones suggestion and inputs.
  3. Curious to know what everyone is using for tapered leaders. I am currently using Rio 7X 9ft and 12ft. They are $12 for a 3 pack and I was wondering if there was any other tapered leaders out there that are the same or close to the same in quality but less expensive.
  4. When I dont pull the tippet through the bead and just use them as big rubber bands the tippet comes off straight, and is what I have been doing since having the curling issue. I have tried stretching it and also tried a leather line straightener and it still has a curl to it. I dont get it.
  5. I purchased these because I was sick of breaking the rubber bands or having them wear out, on the Maxima tippet spools. These keep the tippet on the spools very well but most of the time when I pull the tippet out it curls and will not straighten. Am I doing something wrong or is there a way to stop this from happening? http://www.feather-craft.com/wecs.php?store=feacraft&action=display&target=EW601
  6. Looks good for a first fly. Best advice that was given to me is just keep tying and be imaginative. The fish have no idea what the fly you are tying is supposed to look like. I am not an experienced fly tyer by any means but am always watching videos and trying to combine techniques and materials to come up with my own recipes.
  7. Thanks for the tips. The second fly is supposed to be an egg laying sulfur, hence the large orange bump at the rear of the fly. I saw two different ways to tie it and so far prefer the one using foam for the eggs instead of dubbing, like the one in the second photo. I will try the rest of your suggestions and greatly appreciate you taking the time to respond with some pointers.
  8. Have been tying for about two years but only tied a few nymphs here or there and am new to dries. Any constructive criticism is greatly appreciated. Sorry for the photo quality. I dont have a macro lens for my SLR and my waterproof Lumix doesnt shoot very well up close. Any info any of you have on shooting photos of flies would be greatly appreciated as well. 9. Looking good. I especially like the brown nymphs with the rubber legs. What did you use for the body material so the legs come out of the body like that?
  10. Thank you for sharing this resource and thank you to whoever put the time in creating it.
  11. I recently found the website below while trying to track down a copy of Fran Betters' Fly Fishing Fly Tying and Pattern Guide. I sent an email to the email listed on the site because the link on the site for the book was broken and received a response from Jan Betters, Fran's wife. She has copies of Fran's book and also has signed copies. The book is $25 and a signed copy is $50. She also has a new high definition dvd of him tying the Ausable Wulff, Ausable Bomber, Ausable caddis, the Haystack and the Usual. He discusses during the tying of the fly why he uses certain materials, how to fish the fly and much more. They are $25. You can use the link below or email her directly.
