Red Fox Tail

Recommended Posts

Just a quick tip I started using recently. I have been tying a lot of Foxee Red Clousers. What I found was that I was pulling the underfur out and getting quite a pile of it as I used the correct part of the tail for the fly. Instead of tossing the under fur I found that it makes an excellent material to use in a dubbing loop style created trimmed head.

Here is one I did with wool, but same technique:

The techniques is to form a dubbing loop and then place the fox tail underfur inside the dubbing loop and spin away. Once the hair flares out you then wrap a head as you would if it were just dubbing. This will make the head look like a big poof-ball which you then trim down with your scissors.

Nice, Mike

Underfur is great stuff. I've used the foxtail/crotchfur on some those micro clousers, mostly do to its color, but found later it "flows" better than anything else. That's something with little importance on the big stuff, but essential on smaller ties that have a tendancy to come across rather stiff.

I'll have to start using stuff like that for heads. :headbang:
