  1. I fish for a lot of bluegill in Northern Alabama. My favorite is a "Plan B" for big bream. A "plan B" is pretty much a wooly bugger with Iegs and bead chain eyes. I also have a lot of luck with the "Panfish Polecat" Both flies can be found on warmwater fly tyer. Let me know how they work if you try them. http://warmwaterflytyer.com/pond.asp?page=5
  2. I was looking at a recipe for a wooly bugger and the hook that was called for was a 3906b 1xl. I can only find a 3906b and a 3906b 2xl. Is there such a thing as a 1xl or is 3906b assumed to be 1xl?
  3. Thanks for this post. Great information for those of us just starting out
  4. Thanks everyone. I will tweak my design and see what happens.
  5. I will post a picture when I can. I am using craft store foam and I wondered if that was my problem. I am cutting strips about 1/4" wide and tying them on top of the hook with a little help from some fast drying nail glue I "borrowed" from my teenage daughter. I also wrap the hook before I tie on the foam but I don't think the few wraps of 3/0 thread would soak up enough water to sink the fly. Thanks.
  6. I have noticed that the spiders I am tying from foam sheets will start to sink after a few casts. I am assuming they are absorbing water. I thought I might try coating the foam with head cement but decided to ask the experts first. What would you suggest?
  7. Thanks for posting a picture of the fish caught with the fly. I always love to see the success pictures.
  8. Thanks to all who chimed in. I found a few youth rods for sale that go along with what you are saying. I want to teach him the correct technique but was not sure how I was going to get him to feel the load of the rod and how important this is. I think moving up one line size will really help with this. Thanks again. I am always impressed with the knowledge shared on this forum. Everyone seems to be really helpful.
  9. Thanks to everyone. I feel better about choosing my hooks now. I think the thing that will help me the most is to order a few different sizes to get a feel for what will work with what I like to tie. Your advice will help me order my hooks with more confidence now. Thanks again. Bryan
  10. I am new to fly tying and have a newbie question. My fly tying kit I purchased came with wet fly hooks, dry fly hooks and streamer hooks. I cannot tell any difference in the wet and dry fly hooks. When you are tying wet fly's do you always use wet fly hooks and is there a difference between the two? Thanks for your help.
  11. My seven year old son loves to use my fly rod but has not mastered casting yet. He is wanting his own rod. Should I be looking at smaller weight and shorter rods for him or just the opposite. He is still a little young to really learn how to properly cast but that will not keep him from catching bream and small bass with spiders and ants on top of the water. What would you experts suggest? I have been fly fishing for 25 years and just recently started tying my own flies. He loves to create his own flies and fish them. Thanks for your help.
  12. I ran across this video on making your own bobbin holder on youtube and thought it was pretty good. I have not tried to make one of these yet so im not sure if it will hold the thread tight enough but I thought I would pass it along anyway. Have a blessed day!
  13. I am trying to attach a picture of my first fly again. I have tied several since this one, some look a lot better and one looked really bad. Constructive criticism is a good thing to help me learn. Thanks
  14. Well the picture did not work. I will add it whenever I figure out how.
  15. I have finally finished my first fly. Here is a picture. My fly tying kit came with a few materials so my color choices was very limited but I was not going to let that stop me from tying the first fly. I plan on putting it up so it will never be used anyway. Let me know what you think and what I need to work on. I was not very happy with the head but I broke the thread right before I finished and could not whip finish.
