Hello,

My name is Kraig Morris. I am from Lock Haven, Pa but originally from Cambria County in western Pa. I am so honored to be a member and look forward to being a part. I was partially motivated to join as my dad passed away in December (lifetime fly fisherman and fly tier). It has helped motivate to get more into fly fishing and tying of which I haven't done much tying especially for years.

I could really use some help and guidance with some things I would like to do:

1. I really only know how to use the improved clinch knot and don't really know any other knot and would like to learn other knots.

2. I am thinking about possibly rod/repair and building as hobbies.

3. I would like to tie more flies but I have not tied much for years and when I did it was very simple patterns and could anyone suggest how to re-start?

4. I would like to get more scientific but not overwhelming, any pointers?

Thank You and look forward to being here and hearing from other fly tiers and fisherman.

Kraig Morris

Welcome to the site, Kraig. I'm sure you'll find many answers and inspirations here.

My condolences on your loss.

In answer to your queries above ...

1) There are so many knots, but only a few that have a place in tying and fishing. For tying, learn the half hitch and whip finish. For fishing, the clinch knot and the perfection loop are the only two knots I use. There are more complicated knots, if you decide to build tapered leaders, etc.

2) There's a sister site, Rodbuildersforum that will help more with that ... but Steeldrifter (Site admin) is a pro rod builder and is usually glad to offer assistance, as are several other active members.

3) Go the the "Step by step patterns and tutorials" for plenty of great, detailed instructions to fly patterns. Start simple, with thread midges and foam spiders ... good for sunfish.

4) No easy path to "scientific". The "Entomology" forum is a good place to start researching information.

Other than that ... active participation and questions will get you all the info you could possibly want!

Prybis and Mikecell,

Thank You for your post as greatly appreciated. I really appreciate them very much as helping me deal with my dad's passing away. I look forward to being a member and I will try to look at the great info when I can. Thank You.

You're welcome. If you have specific questions, you can look up and/or post in the "beginner's" forum. We have a walking encyclopedia of past posts and online content called "Flytire". If you ask the question, he'll probably provide the link to the exact answer you're seeking. As usual, the more specific the question, the more specific the answer.

Oh, and pictures, if you can, of the problem or situation can help.

Welcome from Connecticut, can not help with the rod building, but to get started tying again try wooly buggers. Easy to tie, can use different body techniques, and fish love them.

Hello, This is Kraig Morris. Its been a long time. I took my grandson Landon fishing a few weeks back for the 1st time (He is 4) and we had a ball no fish just being together. He is the same age as my son (now 24) when we 1st went fishing together. I am working with a local Trout Unlimited chapter to get involved with their veterans group and hopefully a chapter of Project Healing Waters. I am working to become a chaplain with the Veterans Affairs and looking to get help for myself as my dad passed away last December and his passing away has motivated me to go fishing, fly tying, bike riding, get out and enjoy life. Thank You for listening and God Bless.

Kraig Morris
