A week in the Poconos

Recommended Posts

Got back last Saturday from a week of fishing in the northern Poconos. Overall not a bad week. The weather was hot and sunny. Fishing was decent most days. Had one spectacular day where I caught 3 dozen bluegill and pumpkinseed in about 3 hours and a largemouth bass. The sunnies were between 7 and 10 inches, the bass about 14 inches. Chain pickerel and bass were scarce. I caught just the one bass and two pickerel the whole week. I was stuck with a buddy who is still in the worm and bobber stage and it was his boat. My other two friends spent the week throwing lures for bass and pickerel and had very little to show for it. I was happy to catch the sunfish, since they put a bend in my 6 wgt. We fished mainly Shohola Marsh Reservoir, a small, weedy lake. Here's a picture of it.

Good looking fish ... pretty good size for "the North". Pretty lake, from the picture!

It is a nice lake. I saw a couple eagles and osprey when we were out. It's just weedy as hell. Mike, all the ones I caught were between 7 and 10 inches. They had a nasty habit of getting into the weeds and I lost a few when they did that. I was fishing with 20 or 25 lb tippet. More because the lake has some big bass and chain pickerel in it but it made landing the sunfish a lot easier. When I caught the bass I thought I had another big bluegill on until I got it to the boat.

I don't think many people think of PA as a great fishing location! Let's promise to keep it quiet between all of us! GooDd times and many fish to all!
