making a spoon fly body

Recommended Posts

Interesting idea.

There was an article a few years back in Fly Tyer Magazine about spoon flies made from artificial finger nails, the gals have glued to the finger tip these days.

IMO, the nice thing about fly tying is that it seems to have endless possibilities.

There used to be a company in Arcanum Ohio that made metal spoons for fly fishing. I think the name was Hoffman.

Very nice. Production fast too.

Some where I have an old book that suggests using spinner blades as fly rod spoons, his method involved solder, but I would think the blades could be attached with a modern adhesives just as well.

My first thought on seeing the plastic spoons was that he would shape them and attach to the hooks.

I make my own flutter spoons for shad by soldering an Aberdeen hook to a willow blade. They can be fished with a fly rod or spinning gear. They're a little different from the spoon fly in that the hook eye is soldered on the end of the blade but concept is similar. I like the process in the video simply because it does not involve the use of UV resin.
