dflanagan 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2017 I don't post as much as I should so I figured I'd drop a little report from today. Today was HOT and humid. Something like 103 heat index after a gully washer this morning but I had to get out and try a few new flies. Unfortunately the camera on my phone decided to crap out on me. Didn't realize it at the time because everything seemed to be working fine but no new pics were there when I got home and checked. Despite the heat the fishing was good. Lots of hybrid sunnies and a few little bass. I decided to use the five weight since I was testing some new, larger flies but was kicking myself for leaving the four weight behind when I hooked up with a couple channel cats. I had just caught my first cat on a fly last Saturday so was happily surprised to catch two on back to back casts today. Those things put up one hell of a fight. First time I've gotten the chance to get the fish on the reel in the year I've been fly fishing. I'm definitely hooked on them but it would have been a lot more fun on the glass rod. Had a smallie trip planned for this weekend but the heat is keeping me close to home. Hopefully an opportunity to get on some water will arise and I'll actually get some pics to go along with a report.
Poopdeck 0 Report post Posted July 20, 2017 I replaced my water pump yesterday morning and the plan was to go out afterward. Had the pump replaced by noon but it was so hot I scraped the fishing and went and had Mexican food instead. You should get a metal for going out in 103 degree temps. Glad you were rewarded with some fish.

I think your idea to get Mexican food was a better one than going fishing. Definitely dangerous out there when it's this hot. I think my fishing is done for the week. Poopdeck 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2017 Or a straight jacket is right. Well I got up this morning and gapped the impeller on the boat so I'm gonna take it out early tomorrow morning for a test run and a little fishing. Only going to hit 90 so I should be good till about 10 AM. Not sure if I'm taking a fly rod though. I may just drift and drag some rubber.
Philly 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2017 I've pretty much scrapped fishing the last couple of days. Thought about going out Wednesday evening but the air temp was 96. Yesterday I was pet sitting for my sister and after dinner I went out to check a small creek in a local park I hadn't fished for years again the air temp was in the mid-90's. The banks that I'd remembered as being clear were overgrown. The surface still and scummy. Did see a couple of sunfish on beds but I worked up a sweat just walking along the bank. Decided it wasn't worth getting up early this morning to fish it. Looks like the heat is going to break early next week. Hopefully, I'll get out then. Got some flies to tie, need to get my rod building jig back into working order.
Dave G. 0 Report post Posted July 21, 2017 Here it's the humidity, basically 90 but with 75deg dew point. My grandson called me up earlier in the week to go fishing and I told him we would towards the end of the week. Well it's supposed to break over the week end so maybe next week.I don't even want to uncover the boat never mind take it out LOL. I suppose we could go wading with bathing suits on, didn't think of that. Well still next week, I owe him a fishing trip still from last year yet !. On another note, our canoe hasn't been registered to use the 2-1/2hp gas motor on it since 2002, I got that re-registered today for our next trip to Maine in Sept. There are a couple of places up there we want to get to where in one you power up river a couple of miles and paddle back fishing along the way in various pools. And the other is opposite, paddle down a couple of miles and power back up to the take out . No land access, so a drift boat is ideal, the canoe second best choice, for two people anyway. I hope the water holds out up there, they have had high flows all summer. I'm excited about this for a couple of different reasons.
dflanagan 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2017 Sounds like a great trip, Dave. Hope the water cooperates.
Poopdeck 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2017 Well I got out and had a banner morning. I did take the flyrod but my boat is not conducive to fly fishing so I quickly went to the spin gear. I'm gonna have to get a stripping basket for the boat. Hit the water at 6:00 and fished till 11:30 when the heat beat us into submission. boated 33 smallmouth, 1 carp and a small striper. Wanted to stay since I'm pretty sure we could have went 70 plus. They were stacked like cord wood in the current seams.
dflanagan 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2017 That kinda makes me think I should change the name of this post to "Almost sort of an ok day." A couple dink bass don't quite match up to that many smallies. That is a great day!
Poopdeck 0 Report post Posted July 22, 2017 Oops I think I hijacked you. I couldn't catch anything on the fly rod and a lot if those bass were dinks. Heat brings the dinks out.
