mybadhabit 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2012 I am purchasing some CCG products and was wondering if there is a cheaper light available out there and where one might be able to find it. If anyone has done this I would sure appreciate any help you can give me. Thanks in advance Blane

Thanks in advance Blane For most flytying work all you really need is a single LED (light-emiting diode) of the correct wavelength. I bought one online a couple of years back for less than $3 and it works just fine. (I have just moved and my papers are in a shambles, but I will see if I can identify the vendor.) I think the wavelength was 265nm, but you'll want to verify that before you buy. Even a single UV-emiting LED can damage your eyes, so you will need to wear protective glasses and/or shield the light. Now, if you plan on making larger flies (say 1/0 and up) I would look for a multiple LED flashlight.

rockworm 0 Report post Posted March 11, 2012 I bought my LEDs from Parts Express for $2.25 each: part 070-058; 5mm LED emiting 395nm UV light. Its optimal voltage is 3.7V so you would probably normally use it with 3 AA cells. I just tested one with 2 AA cells (which is less than optimal) and it took about 10 seconds to cure a blob of Clear Cure Goo. My Bug Bond took 20 seconds, but the bottle is getting old. Of course it doesn't cure the Tuffleye product which requires blue light. Hope this helps.
mybadhabit 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2012 Thanks for the links guys, I got a light that will work from one of the links for $4 and it has the right wave length for CCG. I love the way people on this forum are willing to help others that they don't know. Thanks again Blane

flytire 0 Report post Posted March 12, 2012 Sorry for the newbie question, but why do you need an UV light for tying? to cure the uv resin like bug bond, clear cure goo or diamond hard. these resins are a good substitute/replacement for epoxy
