One nice thing about this hobby is that even the expensive things are basically affordable. As an example, compare to setting up a hobbyist's metalworking shop. Even after you drop several grand on a lathe, your not nearly done "accessorizing". Then you would probably like to add a mill to the mix too. The cool think is, at this point you could build your own fly tying vise and other accessories..  Seriously, if you are interested, go to hobby-machinist.com, and they will  guide you to learn everything you need to know.  I could be mistaken, but I think machinists are even more "detail-oriented" than fly fisherman, or perhaps they are about the same in that regard.  Apparently when we see something interesting, something in us says, "I want to do that!".  There are alot of people who don't know how to do Anything--or at least, not very much....lol.  I suspect that most people who have learned to tie a fly, could change a tire or paint a room if they had to. Maybe it would make for an interesting survey or statistical experiment, for someone who does such things.  Who is the "typical fly fisherperson/fly-tyer"?   I'm sure the likes of Fly-Tyer magazine has some idea of the demographics of their customers.
