I was there last summer (further south in Waves)......was doing the family thing and did not get any flyfishing in....a little bit of surf fishing w/the kids......however, I will be going back because my brother built a house near there......here are some websites I found helpful for my future trips:

http://www.outerbanks.org/faqs/index.asp

Generic tourist website w/a lot of good links.....

http://www.flyfishinsalt.com/article.jsp?ID=32025

an online article about flyfishing in the area....

http://oregoninlet.us/flyfishing/login.asp...get=default.asp

a closed forum run by a guide service....lots of good archived info.

http://outerbanksflyfishing.com/index.cfm

the updated website run by the same guide service as above....more current info.

If you get down to waves, this is a great little restaurant w/fresh local seafood...opens early w/good coffee and fresh baked goods.

hope this helps!

AP, I used to fish the surf in False Cape State Park, which is up the beach about 30 miles or so from Duck across the VA line. I was only there for a year and did a lot of fumbling around, but if I had it to do over again, I'd try to hook up with a guide for a day or find somebody with local knowledge in advance. (which You're already doing LOL) There's a lot of water to explore and your time will be limited. You should get there at the right time for redfish (drum) and you could encounter an amazingly wide range of species in the surf and inlets. If you have a good assortment of flies that work in Jersey, you should be able to get by. I did OK with the usual suspects. (deceivers, Clousers, shrimp patterns, crystal buggers, etc.) You also might want to check out the forums at Reel-time. I loved it down there; if my wife hadn't gotten a big promotion/transfer, I never would have left.

The outerbanks flyfishing forum has a tremendous amount of info. including locations to try and fly patterns.....there are no fly shops out there so you will need to bring everything w/you....you might get lucky and find a couple generic leaders or bubble wrapped flies in some of the bait shops, but that is about it....

I stopped in here looking for fly patterns for specks or reds, and saw this.

Summer's a tough time on the Outer Banks. It's hot, lots of tourists there, and there aren't a lot of fish biting. You can get blues and spanish at the piers, spot, croaker, and fluke. Cobia early, and maybe king mackeral. Depends on the day. Where you are I wouldn't expect a lot of surf action, on the fly or even surf casting. You are probably better off hooking up with a local guide at Oregon Inlet or maybe back in the sound.

Get out there early and just before dark. If you can still get access near the old Kitty Hawk Pier, fish the north side, close to the pier, for that matter, the north side of any pier. I do recall a hole near Helga Street. If you have a 4WD, head south, to Hatteras Island, provided you can still get access to the ramps. Check with NPS before making the trip. A lot has changed in the past couple of years. You might want to look at the Red Drum Tackle Shop website as well for info on the beaches, and fishing opportunities on the beaches south of where you're staying.

I know it's not fly fishing related, but there is some decent crabbing if you're willing to drive a bit. Bmail me for details.

TW's tackle shop in kitty hawk across from the post office is a great place to get tackle and fishing reports. I think there's one in Duck, as well.

Good Luck!

Kurt
