  1. QUOTE (SmallieHunter @ Sep 14 2004, 09:24 AM) Man that is one crazy looking rod you got there Steelheaders right... that is the Columbia, about 25 miles downstream from Bonneville dam. And that's a 52" white sturgeon in the pic. When I first moved to the columbia river, catching a sturgeon was THE priority, so I went up to Bonneville dam to see what "those in the know" used for equipment. I about crapped my pants when I saw those rigs. I went straight to Fishermans Marine and few $100's later, had a rig. I used a 13'9" Lamiglass rod (one piece), with a Diawa 50 HV-X Sealine reel... my first casting reel of any kind. Since I primarily fished for keepers (3.5' - 5'), I usually used 30# line. Normally I used 8-10 oz bank sinkers with two 3.5 inch drywall screws tapped into it to help it hold bottom. Just casting that thing was a hoot and a half. After a month or so, I could cast well over 100 yards. I did some boat fishing too, but that dock where the picture was taken was only 3 minutes from my house, so it was easy to throw the rig in the truck and run down after work. I've landed 'em anywhere from 20" to 10.5' from there. There was a regular crew of 5 6 guys that fished there, and usually another guy or two was there every night/morning. The other thing that surprised me, was that they JUMP. Usually they don't clear the water completely, but the big ones definately breach. And they're a lot of work.
  2. QUOTE From your name, are you located in BC now? I married a MI girl and wound up back in MI last year... go figure. I fished the kispiox and a lot of other Skeena Tribs, and the Skeena proper, when I was living in Camas, WA, the previous 5 years. I had the great fortune to have a lot of business in BC, AK, AB and all of the US west of the Divide. So I managed to spend a lot of time in some great watersheds. (somehow I was still able to get a lot of business done) I also slipped right by your neighborhood on the Wynoochee pretty frequently. Gorgeous country for sure. Do they still have a lot of pigs running wild up there?
  3. SteelHeader - Right there with ya on those yummmy sturgeon! Man I miss them.
  4. I love trout fishing... where I learned, what I got hooked on. Fifteen years later, I caught my first bonefish (still my largest to date), and that changed my life, perspective, and appreciation for power, speed and stamina. There's nothing like picking off a big brown sipping in a back eddy. There's nothing like a 150 lb tarpon clearing the water by 5 feet. I luv em both, but if I had to pick one pursuit for the rest of my life... it'd definately be saltwater - tropical saltwater.
  5. Just found this site, looks like a good crew here. I'm originally from MI, have lived and fished extensively in MT, OR, WA also. I spend as much time as possible in the keys chasing flats and blue water critters too. I look forward to becoming a regular here, helping where I can, and of course learning from others.
