  1. my spinner wings go perpendicular to the shank, not above it....you know in a T.... tight lines, hds
  2. that's deer hair? looks like brass wire to me. I tie tricos tails with 2 fibers from goose wing, yes it is usally gray in color but it doesn't seem to matter when it is that small, size 20 and smaller here in MN. I do not "bump" the thread, I simply seperate the fibers and pinch off the farthest away end from the shank and tie it in, it usually splits. I tie thread bodied tricos, if anyone cares. CDC for the spinner, the fish like them.....that I can say, and not the carp but the trout. toght lines. hds
  3. Here in SE MN I tie BWO's mainly in size 18 and I use everything from black hackle to medium dun, it really makes no difference. I also tie a CDC bwo and I usually use yellow or beige cdc. hds

    Carp fishing

That is a normal sized mouth for carp. They are small. Try smaller hooks. And If corn fishing throw out a couple of chum handfuls to bring em in. let em take lots of line before popping them and if you are gonna use weight make sure you use the smallest split shot you can find in front of a slip style sinker, like an egg sinker. hds

    Carp fishing

wow a 2/0 hook?? I guess when I was 10 years old I would fish em with a 6/0 loaded with corn, but that was on my home waters, a shallow muudy farm lake where the water would boil with them, commons, goldfish, and many mirrors. These days I only go bigger than a size 6 if I have to and weight is non-existant. As far as fly rodding for them on a dry, it depends on the fly you are throwing. If is is a cottonwood seed or grass fly 16-24, nymphs standard around size 16 and dries from 10-16, depening on what kind of bugs are in the air and the temps of both the water and the air. I guess generally speaking a 12 would work, in a royal wulff pattern is you are sight fishing for cloopers, but here on the ole miss, SE Minn, during the white mayfly hatch it is gerally a size 18 and during the fish fly hatch a 14. It all depends. I have yet to get the balls and use a fly hook with a signle nugget of corn on it when spin fishing, but I have to sort out monofilament issues and rocks first. Hope this helps. Carp fishing

Yes, I have caught carp on dries. They cloop during cottonwood seed falls and you can often find them under mulberry trees. They will take damselflies and mayflies(dead or alive). Its a hell or a rush, although timing is super key in hooking a sucker mouth on the surface, it takes a lot of practice. HDS

    Carp fishing

I mostly fish carp from shore or on flats that I can see them tailing on. So this is where the flies will fit. Deep water carp are something I have not really fished. Tight Lines, HDS

    size 32 hooks

What am I tying? MIDGE MIDGE MIDGE....its north eastern Iowa time, its open year round, and the midge come with that. Talk about a bitch to tie though. grr. but the payoff is sweet, Its stockie city but they dump at 15-18 inches in iowa, and in SHEER numbers, they creek are super clean and put BWO's up almost year round if the weather is right. They just do not have any stream side rehab there, just a stocking program. BUt BIG ass trout. The majority of the streams are no keep under 18 inches...jeez, here in SE minn its no keep OVER 16....hmmmm..... By the way the tiemco's do have an eye, I am not sure about the dai rikki's though. But I have noticed that the dai riki's run bigger than mustads, much sharper though. Too bad hooks are like shoes, every company make a different size and puts the same numbers on them. anyways, tight lines, HDS
  9. I found some size 32 hooks today. They are in chicago and tiemco and dai-richi makes em. They have eyes too. If you want em they are at Dan's Tackle, 2237 W. Mclean Ave, Chicago, IL 60647, (773) 276-5562, [email protected], he will ship them. Tell him Heath sent ya. HDS
  10. as a carp fisherman I always wonder why no manufactuor lists carp rods as a target species for there rod. This is stictly american. Take orvis for example they list bonefish and redfish, I mean sea carp and sheepshead?!?!?! I do not get it. Anybody have any insight on this? HDS

    Carp fishing

I am in Minnesota on the Mississippi river. If you ever wanna come up they start to go nuts in late april just before the spawn, its also when the giant drangonflies start to hatch. We have a ton of species of carp here to fish, from commons to coldwater/spring fed creek carpsuckers...its tons of fun. Especially on light gear. HDS
  12. I would just have to guess that human hair woul dbe poor because of its scent it pulls from the shampoo, cat and dog hair is good, but it is also naturally scented. HDS
  13. wow thats great!! spread the love and keep teaching tying..... hds
