whitefish

Recommended Posts

Whitefish are everywhere in my local lake, but the haven't got a clue how to catch them thought I might try some top water flies and some small baitfish right after ice out. Feel free to criticize my idea, I would rather be pointed in the right direction than fish for a month and realize my method is totally useless.

Depending on where you are ... check the hatches. I was in Norwood, MA a couple of years ago, January and February. It was cold, snow everywhere ... basically sucked.

But, I did have a pair of waders and did some fishing. While on the water, I did witness a few small fish in shallow areas. I think they were feeding on bug that were too small to see clearly. I don't a fly could be tied small enough. But, the smallest flies you CAN tie would probably be the closest match, and likely what the fish are keying in on.

We have a big whitefish run in early winter where i live, happens just after the sea trout & salmon sporning run up river, not shore, maybe they go to eat the eggs? Hard fish to land in moving water, small mouth & realy soft too! Normal ratio is even hook 10 land 1! In a lake though, i'm shore i've seen whitefish dry fly paturns in Finnish magazines. Just remember they have a small mouth! Could try a small egg paturn! I use 3 eggs in early winter, the legal amount on that river!

I had a look on some Finnish pages, if you ty some dry flies? Use a hook that has the bend & point sitting deep in the water! If anyone is using egg flies for whitefish in a river? I would like to know what hooks & size you are using? Thanx!
