TroutBum12 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2017 Hi. Maybe an odd question but, any of you that sell flies, what do you package them in? I've been searching the net for hinged plastic boxes but not easy to find in smaller quantities. I'm thinking this kind of box for dries so how about wet flies and soft hackles. Same boxes or something else. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

shoebop 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2017 How many flies per shipment? 12? 100? 200? https://www.google.com/search?q=small+plastic+containers&rlz=1C1PRFI_enUS729US729&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjtu8Of5ODSAhUF74MKHQjpDeIQ_AUICSgC&biw=1366&bih=638 ...try this for starters These are the ones I would recommend. They are the cheapest and the same ones you get in most flyshops when you buy their flies. https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/small-plastic-containers-with-lids-disposable_1945948886.html

mikechell 0 Report post Posted March 18, 2017 For selling small items ... I've found jewelry boxes work well. https://www.storesupply.com/pc-13186-769-cotton-filled-jewelry-boxes-kraft-87402.aspx?gclid=CP6b4bmZ4dICFRY9gQodb5cNNg&gclsrc=aw.ds I've never understood the "nice" packaging some people use to sell stuff in. I, almost always, take things out of whatever package they came in, and put it in my own containers. I am thinking most people who buy flies are going to put them in their own boxes, so providing them with a fly box would be a waste of money, yours or theirs. TroutBum12 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2017 Thanks to all that replied so far. I've found the boxes for trading cards in my searching and like them. The company stabgnid linked to looks good. The biggest problem with most companies that sell plastic boxes is you have to buy by the carton of maybe a few hundred or more. Not sure I'm ready to put over $100 into plastic boxes. I'm thinking of selling soft hackles and some dries maybe. Smaller size trout flies. The nice thing about soft hackles and north country spider style flies is they're easy to tie and go pretty fast. Seems lots of people are getting into using them these days. I like tying traditional trout fly patterns. Will try to get a picture or two of my flies to post. I joined this forum some years ago but haven't posted in a long time. Thanks again for the help.
FlatsRoamer 0 Report post Posted March 19, 2017 Just curiosity but how much do your little trout flies go for? When I sell my saltwater flies they are usually $3 except for a couple

johnnyquahog 0 Report post Posted March 20, 2017 If you are going for a professional look then include a business card. I've used a variety of stuff depending on the size and type of fly. First impressions are important if you want repeat customers. You can get 100 zip lock 2x3, 2x4 or 2x5 bags for a few dollars. For a dozen #14/#16 drys consider clamshell plastic blister packs. They come in all kinds of sizes and quantities. They will pay for themselves with reduced shipping since they add minimal weight. just one example of what I am referring to; http://www.ebay.com/itm/Clamshell-Packaging-Blister-Packs-plastic-boxes-Lot-of-50-small-square-clear-NEW-/182475389304?hash=item2a7c617978:g:QCUAAOSwBw5XQ0nr

I like the idea. Also the suggestion of including a business card, or I'm thinking, some sort of label with business information. Also the little zip lock bags would work well for nymphs and streamers although I don't really tie streamers. What do you all think would be best for soft hackles, flymphs, wet flies? The little bags would work but would something that doesn't flatten the hackle be better.
troutguy 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2017 Plastic baseball card box of appropriate height. I use Avery clear labels and print my name, the trout avatar and address. I hot glue a black high density foam strip or two to hold the flies. All of mine are gifts. I give mine away to friends, people who are just starting out and raffle prizes for the Carolina Fly Fishing Club. You need to be honest about your price and quality of your product. Are you appealing to the less than a dollar a fly crowd, then pack as cheap as you can. If your flies are art you want to package them in a manner that makes you proud to sell them. Flat Rock native 0 Report post Posted March 21, 2017 Here are some inexpensive options if you are looking to "Brand" your products. These are given away in our local store. Also, fly and Mini-display from BT's (Gretchen and Al Beatty) who seem to know quite a bit about tying and marketing flies
Al Beatty 0 Report post Posted March 22, 2017 Hi Ken, Thanks for the plug. We've been using the "little boxes" for a number of years to protect flies we ship. As I remember we bought about 5,000 of them of about $.05 per unit. Another way to ship flies is by taping them inside a Small Priority Flat Rate SPFR) mailing box. The way to do it: Before folding the box, Scotch tape short mono loops inside the box with one loop per fly hook. Run a 6-8" section of mono through the hook eye then snag the hook on the mono loop. Pull the mono in the hook eye tight and tape it to the box to hold the fly in place. If the flies are not too large, you can "suspend" a couple dozen flies in a SPFR mailing box. Take care & ...
