Recommended Posts

Thank you for the warm welcome..

I just started to fly tie with a beginners class held at my local Orvis store. Hubby got me a Tenkara rod for Christmas so now I’m really “hooked” have always enjoyed fly fishing but put it down for a number of years. Time to find me time

Hey Rarejul, welcome to the site. Looks like you already are finding your way around the search tool; you found the recent Tenkara thread anyway. Show us what you learn re the 1600's Tenkara history, you'll have interest here

Links to good pages of what I consider the best tenkara/kebari resource;

If these interest you he has more pages listed at the bottom.
One interesting thing to me is that the history of Japanese fly fishing seems to date back to about the time of British contact, and no earlier. I believe a lot of the flies resemble north country flies from that time also.
The modern Tenkara using graphite and a single style of fly is USA marketing, not really an eons old tradition.

Welcome from SE PA. I've dabbled in Tenkara and tied a few tenkara flies. I ended up catching a couple crappie and sunfish on the rod. The streams I fish aren't really conducive to using a Tenkara rod. Too many low hanging trees along the them.

I am just outside of philly in the burbs..

I dabble in Renaissance re enactment so the study of fly fishing in “period” is of interest to me. The Tenkara would be closer to more of what they “England” would have been using at the time. Medieval India however seems to have beaten the English to the punch in 1100ad.. But Japan.. and China were also pretty clever.. so I’m also looking for resources from those areas as well. And these are things that occupy my mind when I see flies, rods and fish..

I was recently asked if I would consider volunteering with female veterans on tying and fishing with the healing waters project held at several Veterans hospitals. https://projecthealingwaters.org/programs/

I talked with the folks from PHW last year at the Valley Forge TU Trout show but never got my butt in gear. Was still settling into the retirement mode. I'll have to stop and talk to them again at this year's show and get involved. As far as Tenkara sites, when I was looking into it, a few years ago, I just googled "Japanese Tenkara Fishing" sites and checked them out. There were a couple that were in both Japanese and English. Found them very interesting and informative.
