Fast vs. Slow water flies

Recommended Posts

When you sit at your vise and begin to create your next masterpiece, take just a moment and think about where the fly will be used. A caddis imitation is often tied bushy and full for fast water conditions. This allows the fly great surface area and enables it to ride high in fast or turbid water. Slower water conditions demand that the fly be dressed a little "lighter", or sparser, which may actually be a more realistic pattern. Be sure not to limit yourself to just one variation of a fly when you tie. It is always a good idea to tie several of both fast water and slow water styles so you can be prepared for any unexpected conditions. (note: the caddis was used as an example...this rule applies to all dries, attractors, or stimulator patterns.)
