Threads for newbies

Okay, here is the second installment of my tutorial for our new tiers. Today we shall breifly talk about threads.

Flytying thread is used of course to secure materials to the hook and with as little build up as possible. For years, silk was the standard thread and many traditionalists and ol' farts still prefer it to modern threads. Threads range in various sizes, and just in the last 50 or so years, have kinda become "stnadardized" in thier guaging. For years, manufacturers use the "zero" method. The more zeros a thread was designated, the smaller the diameter. Today, this same principle applies, but threads are rated as "3/0" or "10/0", etc. The thing to remember is that the higher the rating, the thinner the thread. Typically, a size 6/0 is a standard thread used to tie nymphs, streamers, and larger dry patterns. Your thicker and tougher threads like 3/0, 2/0, and 1/0 are used for larger streamers, bass bugs, spinning hair, and saltwater patterns.

New advances in technology have now given us threads of synthetics like Kevlar and Spectra, both of which are great for big bass bugs and are virtually unbreakable under tying conditions. So for you new tiers, keep this in mind when at the bench or purchasing your threads. Any questions? Let me know and we can get a little deeper on this subject.
