Lucian.Vasies 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2018 Hi guys, I need your advice in choosing a pair of good eye glasses. I used Devaux with glass lenses, very good but I lost them in Lapland last Autumn. I'm looking for a good pair. I need to take care of my eyes to tie flies . I know that this topic is not new... But the last one was in 2015 so there are 2 years from then... I heard about Costa Del Mar that they have a bad service support. Smith and Oakley seems to be good but never tested... I do not not about Ray Ban... Other brands? So for river fishing which is your advice? Thank you in advance:) Lucian

chugbug27 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2018 Cocoons $50 They sell them to old people to wear over their glasses to keep out the sun They sell a nice polarized version with different tints- work great for fishing, esp if you wear glasses, maybe even if you don't. You can get them polarized and photochromatic in the same lens. The lenses come in multiple colors. You can also get polarized lenses with a magnifying insert on the bottom of the lens. The glasses are well worth the money. Color, I use either brown or gray most times. If by chance you scratch a lens the replacement policy is really good also. http://www.e-rudy.com/en/products/filter/category/sunglasses
Lucian.Vasies 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2018 I'm curious to hear the opinion of a specialist about these new generation of eyeglasses. Glass or polycarbonate ?? Anyway I want to buy a good pair of glasses. I will stay each Summer in Lapland (polar circe) for at least one month. In July and August is full light, means that in July, at 2am you can read your paper... But the waters are dark in color, not muddy, are clear but are more like coca-cola.The color is from earthy brown soil, it is a kind of acid moor. Lot of light outside but very dark waters. Also late in the day the light is kind of metallic grey. I found difficult to wear sunglasses .... I really do not know what color should I choose.... The Impact-X and x2 are made from the same stuff as the bullet proof cowling on military helicopters. Apaches I think. http://www.rudyprojectusa.com/technology.php
deaddrifter 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2018 A little dated but... https://www.hatchmag.com/articles/best-fishing-sunglasses-2015-2016/7712725 I have a pair of Smith Chromapop and really like them. As far as what color to choose, I would suggest you go to a knowledgeable dealer of whatever brand you decide you like and ask for their opinion. I wanted a general all-person so I went with amber and it's worked well.
chugbug27 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2018 Well, it's not Lapland but the cocoons worked for me in the winter sierras (5F-40F plus wind, 6-10ft deep but clear stream). Here's what they look like 🤗
mikechell 0 Report post Posted January 8, 2018 As with most things, I don't spend a lot of money on sunglasses. $15.00 Strike King polarized glasses have worked for me since the 80's ... no cataracts or problems as of my latest eye doctor visit two weeks ago. I usually replace them once or twice a year ... and still spend a bunch less than some of the high dollar glasses. As for color ... if you can find yellow, polarized glasses, buy 'em. For low light conditions, they're fantastic. For all other situations, I wear amber/brown glasses. I've tried on blue, green and grey colors and didn't care for any of them. I bought and tried grey ones after hearing they're supposed to be good on cloudy days and lowlight conditions. Baloney ... if you ask me. I did not like them at all. After a couple of days with them, I threw them away and bought another pair of amber.
Poopdeck 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2018 10 dollar Blueblockers! Sold at gas station parking lots everywhere. I've tried on the Maui Jims, costa delmars, raybans and just don't see the value but I'm cheap. Polarized is polarized right?
JSzymczyk 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2018 just don't see the value but I'm cheap. Polarized is polarized right? No. Not even close. There are infinite variables to control through manufacturing processes, including what type, direction, and amount of polarization. That is all before even considering lens material, distortion correction, coatings, etc. I sort of get the argument, but only to a point. I know people who spend $400 on a set of headphones to listen to music. I'm half deaf at certain frequencies in one ear and almost as bad at other freq's in the other ear, so I could not be able to enjoy whatever performance benefit those might have versus something cheaper and shoddier. "Pretty good" is all that I will ever be able to recognize as far as sound.... If you're the type of guy who is happy to drive around constantly with a filthy windshield, or you're a modern-art aficionado, or your vision is just crap to begin with then maybe cheap lenses are ok. no offense to Mike, but for $15 twice a year, you could spend that $120 on a pretty good set of glasses which would still be going strong four years later, and have performed way better than cheap, soft, irregularly polarized acetate lenses in those strike kings. My eyes are the last best part of me- I've always been blessed with excellent vision and now creeping up on 50 I need corrective lenses for up close work but my last eye doc appt I still had 20/15 in each eye individually and 20/10 using both eyes together- so to me very good optics are not only worth the $$$ but I can absolutely tell good from junk. There is a whole sh*tload of science behind great optics, and there are a lot of reasons why cheap glasses are cheap, and decent glasses are expensive. mikechell 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2018 No offense taken, I understand your argument, JS ... but I disagree that a $120.00 pair of glasses will still be going strong 4 years later. My regular glasses are ready to retire each year when I go in to get my prescription checked. I treat them better than my sunglasses, and they still barely make it one year. I've never been an "equipment" guy. Never named a car, motorcycle or boat. Never collected anything. I treat my vehicles just good enough to make them last as long as possible, mechanically. But I rarely wash them and even more rarely polish them. The problem I have (the opposite of your justification) is that I CAN'T STAND a dirty windshield ... or glasses. I am cleaning mine all the time. I see a glimmer of light where it shouldn't be ... I blame my glasses and wipe them off. I always use a micro-fiber glasses cleaning cloth. Still, I need new lenses every year. As with everything ... everybody has an opinion. We just have to agree that we disagree.
xterrabill 0 Report post Posted January 9, 2018 light amber/brown polarized worked the best for me in Alaska (grey ash and clear waters). brands, tried a few, nothing over 75 bucks. yes the more expensive seemed better till you loose or scratch them, I prefer glass over polys for scrip. 400 on headphones LOL keep going, some go for over a grand and you need a special amp to match the quality, so there goes another 2-7 grand! a mechanic needs good tools, a sound engineer needs good phones.
