Any ideas?

Recommended Posts

Anyone identify this big green ugly bug?

From a kick sample the other day on the river Derwent in Derbyshire, UK.

Plenty of Baetis, stoneflies, Hydropsyche and Rhyacophilia plus Danica, but cant find out what the green bug is. Its about 2-3 cm long.

Thanks,

Simon

They look to me like the larvae of an aquatic fly. Predators which live in the muck. You would probably need to dissect one under a microscope to identify the species.

a species of cranefly was my first impression too. It is without a doubt some sort of Diptera because of the lack of true legs(segmented, jointed legs) and the presence of pairs of fleshy prolegs on the abdominal segments.

Diptera (fly) of some kind, looks big like a cranefly larva

For sure it is a crane fly larva. If I were you I would use it as a fly model before decompisition kicks in. Would be a deadly fly. If you make it I bet first cast you will get a strike with out a doubt!

Ok, got the definitives on these two, the one on the left is a cranefly and the one on the right is a snipe fly. Massively outnumbered by Baetis, Caddis, Ephemera etc etc...
